Estimating Products and Quotients

To estimate products and quotients, just round the numbers and multiply/divide them accordingly. For the problem 5,093×73 for example: 5,093 rounds to 5,000, and 73 rounds to 70. 5,000×70=350,000.

Estimating Products and Quotients

Estimating Products and Quotients. To estimate products and quotients you’re just going to round your number and then multiply them or divide them. Let’s look at two examples. First, we’re going to multiply 5,093 times 73, so we’re going to start by rounding these.

5,093 is about 5,000, times, and then 73 we could round to 70. Then when we multiply, we just multiply our 5 times our 7 which is 35, and then count up all the trailing 0s (1, 2, 3, 4) which means our answer has 1, 2, 3, 4 0s in it. Count from the back (1, 2, 3) there’s your comma, so 5,000 times 70 is 350,000, or about 350,000.

Then 32,068 divided by 836. We could round 32,000 to 30,000, but then I see this 836 I’m going to round to 800, and it would be easier for me to divide 32 by 8 than 30 by 8. I’m going to round 32,068 to about 32,000, divided by, 836 I’ll round to the nearest hundred place 800.

Then when I’m dividing, the first thing I could do is simplify by canceling some 0s, so I’m really just doing 320 divided by 8. Well, 32 divided by 8 is 4 and then we add a 0 since we’re doing 320 divided by 8. 32,068 divided by 836 is going to be somewhere around 40, and 5,093 times 73 is going to be somewhere around 350,000.
