Post-Colonialism in the Middle East

At the end of WWII, the United Nations decided to partition Palestine and allow Israel to become an independent Jewish state in 1948. In 1951, Iran nationalized oil interests. Future leaders would eventually emulate this act. In 1967, Israel defeated a group of Arab states in the Six Day War and was able to gain the West Bank, Sinai, and Jerusalem. In 1972, 12 Israeli athletes were murdered at the Munich Olympic Games by Palestinian terrorists. In 1973, Israelis and Arabs were engaged in battle again during the Yom Kippur War. To ease tensions, Jimmy Carter held successful peace talks between Israel and Egypt. While this helped stop fighting between Israel and Egypt, there was still fighting between Israel and Palestine that would continue for many years.
