The CSET Music exam is a subject-specific assessment taken by prospective educators who wish to teach in the state of California. The test covers subject areas such as historical and cultural foundations, creative expression, and music methodology and repertoire. The exam is divided into 3 subtests. The first subtest has 45 multiple-choice and 3 constructed-response questions. The other 2 subtests each have 40 multiple-choice questions and 2 constructed-response questions. Each year, there are 4 different 4-week periods in which the exam can be taken.
