MTTC Physical Education (044) Practice Test

The Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) Physical Education test is required of all teacher candidates wishing to teach physical education in Michigan secondary schools.

Exam Outline Review

The MTTC Physical Education exam contains 100 multiple-choice questions, and you will be given a time limit of 2.5 hours.

The exam is split into six subareas.

I. Physical Activity, Fitness, and Health (17%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • Physical activity and fitness concepts
  • Developing and maintaining a healthy level of cardiorespiratory endurance
  • Developing and maintaining a healthy level of muscular strength and endurance
  • Developing and maintaining a healthy level of flexibility
  • Developing and maintaining a healthy level of body composition

II. Movement and Lifelong Physical Activities (27%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • Application of biomechanics to movement activities
  • Basic principles related to fundamental motor skills
  • Developing locomotor skills
  • Developing object control skills
  • Developing postural non-locomotor skills
  • Developing rhythmic skills
  • Rules, skills, and safety practices for team, dual, and individual sports
  • Rules, skills, and safety practices for recreational activities and outdoor pursuits

III. Growth, Development, and Learning (14%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • The organic structures of the human body
  • Physical growth and development
  • The cognitive, emotional, and social development and growth of individuals
  • Differing approaches to learning in a physical education setting

IV. Planning, Instruction, and Assessment (14%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • Instructional design and planning for physical education
  • Developmentally appropriate instructional strategies in a physical education setting
  • Safety concerns and procedures pertaining to physical education programs
  • Formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate learners in a physical education setting

V. Management, Motivation, and Communication (14%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • Principles and methods of instructional management in a physical education setting
  • Factors related to individual and group motivation in a physical education setting
  • Positive personal and social traits that can be fostered within the context of physical activity
  • Effective communication techniques to foster collaboration, inquiry, and engagement in physical activity

VI. Foundations, Reflection, and Professional Collaboration (14%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • The foundations of physical education
  • The importance of physical education and fitness to students
  • The roles and responsibilities of physical education teachers in the learning community
  • Developing professional relationships and reflecting on teaching practices

Registration

To register for the MTTC Physical Education exam, you must create an online NES account via their website. You can register for the exam and schedule an exam date through this account. When you register, you will need to pay the $129 examination fee.

Test Day

On test day, you should arrive at the testing center about 30 minutes prior to the scheduled exam time. When you arrive, you will be asked to present one form of valid, government-issued photo ID. If you forget to bring your ID or your ID is invalid, you will not be able to take the exam.

After the check-in process, you will be asked to leave all personal items in a secure locker outside the testing area. This includes your cell phone, bags, wallet, keys, food, and any smoking/vaping devices. If you wear eyeglasses, they will be inspected by a testing center agent before you enter the testing room.

Once you enter the testing room, you will be asked to sign an NDA, and you will be given a brief tutorial on the computer-adaptive testing system. Once the tutorial is complete, the exam will begin.

How the Exam is Scored

Your MTTC Physical Education score is reported within the range of 100-300 and is based on your performance on all sections of the test. To pass the exam, you must achieve a scaled score of 220.

You should receive your test results roughly 2-4 weeks after taking the exam. When you receive your score report, you will see your total score, your pass/fail status, and your scores for each subarea of the test.
