MTTC Social Studies (Secondary) Exam Outline

The MTTC Social Studies (Secondary) exam contains 100 multiple-choice questions and has a time limit of 2.5 hours.

The exam is split into seven subareas.

I. Historical Perspectives (10%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • Historical concepts and terms
  • Historical sources of information and perspectives

II. World History (18%)

The questions in this subarea cover major events and developments in world history during the following eras:

  • The beginnings of human society to 4000 BCE
  • 4000-1000 BCE
  • 1000 BCE-300 CE
  • 300-1500 CE
  • 1500-1700 CE
  • 1700-1914 CE
  • 1912-1945 CE
  • 1945-1999 CE

III. US History (18%)

The questions in this subarea cover major events and developments in US history during the following eras:

  • Beginnings to 1620 CE
  • 1620-1763 CE
  • 1763-1800 CE
  • 1800-1861 CE
  • 1861-1877 CE
  • 1877-1930 CE
  • 1930-1945 CE
  • 1945-1989 CE
  • 1990 CE-Present

IV. Geography (18%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • Geographic terms, resources, and concepts
  • Physical systems
  • Interactions between human societies and the environment
  • Human systems

V. Political Science (13%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • Political science terms, perspectives, and concepts
  • The foundations of US government
  • The US political process
  • The rights and responsibilities of US citizenship
  • The structure, organization, and operation of different levels of government in the US
  • The role of the US in the international community

VI. Economics (13%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • Economic concepts
  • The market economy
  • Personal finance
  • The national and international economy

VII. Inquiry, Interdisciplinary Perspectives, and Public Discourse (10%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • Social science research methods
  • Analyzing and interpreting social studies information
  • Interdisciplinary perspectives
  • Core democratic values
  • Recognizing the rights and responsibilities of citizenship in a democratic society
  • Analyzing public policy questions

MTTC Social Studies (Secondary) Exam Registration

To register for the MTTC Social Studies (Secondary) exam, you must create an online NES account via their website. You can register for the exam and schedule an exam date through this account. When you register, you will need to pay the $129 examination fee.

Test Day

You should arrive at the testing center 30 minutes prior to the scheduled exam time. This will give you enough time to complete the check-in process. Once you arrive, you will be asked to present one form of valid, government-issued photo ID. If you forget to bring your ID or your ID is invalid, you will not be able to take the exam.

After the check-in process, you will be asked to leave all personal items in a secure locker outside the testing area. This includes your cell phone, bags, wallet, keys, food, and any smoking/vaping devices. If you wear eyeglasses, they will be inspected by a testing center agent before you enter the testing room.

Once you enter the testing room, you will be asked to sign an NDA, and you will be given a brief tutorial on the computer-adaptive testing system. Once the tutorial is complete, the exam will begin.

How the Exam is Scored

Your MTTC Social Studies (Secondary) score is reported within the range of 100-300 and is based on your performance on all sections of the test. To pass the exam, you must achieve a scaled score of 220.

You should receive your test results roughly 2-4 weeks after taking the exam. When you receive your score report, you will see your total score, your pass/fail status, and your scores for each subarea of the test.
