The Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) Learning Disabilities test is required of all teacher candidates wishing to teach students with learning disabilities in Michigan secondary schools.

MTTC Learning Disabilities Exam Outline

The MTTC Learning Disabilities exam contains 100 multiple-choice questions and has a time limit of 2.5 hours.

The exam is split into four subareas.

I. Understanding Students with Learning Disabilities (13%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • The educational foundations and principles in the field of learning disabilities
  • Types, characteristics, and implications of learning disabilities on the progressions of learning, communication, physical, and social-emotional skills development

II. Assessing Students with Learning Disabilities and Developing Individualized Programs (27%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • Various assessment instruments and assessment practices for evaluating the strengths and needs of students with learning disabilities
  • Conducting assessments
  • Interpreting and communicating the results of assessments
  • Developing, implementing, and amending IEPs and transition plans for students with learning disabilities
  • Managing the learning environment
  • Individualizing instruction for students with learning disabilities

III. Teaching and Promoting the Development of Students with Learning Disabilities (47%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • Promoting the oral language and communication skills of students with learning disabilities
  • Promoting the emergent literacy skills of students with learning disabilities
  • Promoting the reading skills of students with learning disabilities
  • Promoting the written expression of students with learning disabilities
  • Promoting the mathematical performance of students with learning disabilities
  • Promoting the social-emotional competence of students with learning disabilities
  • Developing and implementing effective behavioral interventions for students with learning disabilities

IV. Working in the Professional Environment (13%)

The questions in this subarea cover the following topics:

  • Communicating and collaborating with students, their families, general education teachers, and related service providers
  • The professional, ethical, and legal roles and responsibilities involved in the education of students with learning disabilities

MTTC Learning Disabilities Exam Registration

To register for the MTTC Learning Disabilities exam, you must create an online NES account via their website. You can register for the exam and schedule an exam date through this account. When you register, you will need to pay the $129 examination fee.

Test Day

On test day, you should arrive at the testing center around 30 minutes prior to the scheduled exam time. Once you arrive, you will be asked to present one form of valid, government-issued photo ID. If you forget to bring your ID or your ID is invalid, you will not be able to take the exam.

After the check-in process, you will be asked to leave all personal items in a secure locker outside the testing area. This includes your cell phone, bags, wallet, keys, food, and any smoking/vaping devices. If you wear eyeglasses, they will be inspected by a testing center agent before you enter the testing room.

Once you enter the testing room, you will be asked to sign an NDA, and you will be given a brief tutorial on the computer-adaptive testing system. Once the tutorial is complete, the exam will begin.

How the MTTC Learning Disabilities Exam is Scored

Your MTTC Learning Disabilities score is reported within the range of 100-300 and is based on your performance on all sections of the test. To pass the exam, you must achieve a scaled score of 220.

You should receive your test results roughly 2-4 weeks after taking the exam. When you receive your score report, you will see your total score, your pass/fail status, and your scores for each subarea of the test.
