The NMTA Music Exam is designed to evaluate the competency of applicants pursuing licensure to teach music in the public school system of New Mexico. The test is available year round, and a seat is secured by making an appointment. On the exam are 150 multiple choice questions, and a total time of 3 hours is given to complete them. The content of the questions is divided into 4 domains, which are (I) Aural Analysis Skills, (II) Music Theory and Composition, (III) Music History and Culture, and (IV) Music Methodology and Performance.
