The Roman Empire: The Pax Romana

After Augustus became the first emperor, Rome experienced a relatively peaceful period known as the Pax Romana (the Roman Peace). Rome reached its greatest geographic proportions during this time as art and architecture flourished. The polytheist religion of Rome was first challenged toward the end of this period as Christianity developed.
