The Beginning of American Imperialism

In this video we have a discussion of the beginnings of American Imperialism. It began in the 1880s as the United States took a stronger interest in foreign affairs. Initial motives were humanitarian as the U.S. hoped to improve the standard of living around the world. They wanted to help struggling people and countries. Along with this humanitarian desire, there was also an economic motive as manufacturers wanted to find new sources of raw materials as well as new markets for their products. There were also religious reasons as American missionaries began to travel abroad to seek to convert others to Christianity. Some in the U.S. also had military reasons for an increased involvement in foreign affairs. Part of this was a desire to acquire naval bases in the Pacific.
