Overview of the NCMHCE Test Content

1. Assessment and Diagnosis
• Integrate client assessment and observational data
• Identify precipitating problems or symptoms
• Identify individual and/or relationship functioning
• Identify relevant family issues.

2. Counseling and Psychotherapy

• Inform client about ethical standards and practice
• Clarify counselor/client roles
• Implement individual counseling in relation to a plan of treatment
• Evaluate referral information

3. Administration, Consultation, and Supervision
• Maintain case notes, records and/or files
• Determine if services meet clients’ needs
• Communicate orally with others to maintain professional communications
• Assist clients with obtaining services.

What is the NCMHCE?

The NCMHCE is the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Exam. The NCMHCE  is required for those who wish to become a Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor and is required in for licensure in some states.

How many questions are on the NCMHCE?

There are 200 multiple-choice questions on the NCMHCE.

How long does it take to complete the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Exam?

It takes 3 hours and 15 minutes to complete the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Exam.

How much does it cost to take the NCMHCE?

To sit for the NCMHCE, you will need to pay a fee of $275.

What is on the NCMHCE?

The NCMHCE consists of 10 clinical mental health counseling cases. Each case is divided into five to ten sections that are classified as Information Gathering or Decision Making. Each section will have 4 to 14 selections for answers. You will be given cases over:

• Assessment and Diagnosis
• Counseling and Psychotherapy
• Administration, Consultation, and Supervision

What is the passing score for the NCMHCE?

You must have a raw score of 9 in both the IG and DM sections of the NCMHCE to be considered as passing.

Can you retake the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Exam?

Yes. You can retake the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Exam. However, you will be required to wait 3 months from the time you took your initial test.
