TSI Math Practice Questions

One of the best ways to test your knowledge is by taking a practice test. Evaluate your math skills by trying your hand at the five practice questions below!

Answer each question and read through the answer explanation, whether you got the answer right or wrong. This will help you ensure you’ve got the topic mastered.

Whether you struggled with these questions or aced them on your first try, be sure to take the full practice test to get a better idea of how prepared you really are!

1. Stephen rolls a die and tosses a coin. What is the probability he gets an even number and heads?

The probability may be written as:

\(P(E \text{ and }H) = P(E) \times P(H)\)

The probability of rolling an even number on a die is \(P(E) = \frac{3}{6} = \frac{1}{2}\). The probability of a coin landing on heads is \(P(H) = \frac{1}{2}\). Substituting the probability of each event gives \(P(E \text{ and } H) = \frac{1}{2} \times \frac{1}{2} = \frac{1}{4}\).

2. A sphere has a diameter of 7 inches. Which of the following best represents the volume?

The volume of a sphere may be calculated using the formula \(V=\frac{4}{3} \pi r ^3\), where \(r\) represents the radius. Substituting 3.5 for \(r\) gives \(V=\frac{4}{3} \pi (3.5)^3\), which simplifies to \(V \approx 179.6 \text{ in}^3\).

3. Which of the following expressions is equivalent to \(-3x(x-2)^2\) ?

The expression \((x-2)^2\) may be expanded as \(x^2-4x+4\). Multiplication of \(-3x\) by this expression gives \(-3x^3+12x^2-12x\).

4. A metal rod used in manufacturing must be as close as possible to 15 inches in length. The tolerance of the length, \(L\), in inches, is specified by the inequality \(|L-15| \leq 0.01\). What is the minimum length permissible for the rod?

The inequality specifies that the difference between \(L\) and 15 inches must be less or equal to 0.01. Note that \(|14.99-15|=|-0.01|=0.01\), which is equal to the specified tolerance and therefore meets the condition.

5. A 6th grade math teacher is introducing the concept of positive and negative numbers to a group of students. Which of the following models would be the most effective when introducing this concept?

Number lines can help students understand the concepts of positive and negative numbers. Fraction strips are most commonly used with fractions. Venn diagrams are commonly used when comparing groups. Shaded regions are commonly used with fractions or percentages.
