NCLEX Review: Thoracentesis Procedure

Thoracentesis is a procedure in which a needle is inserted into the pleural space to remove fluid or air, biopsy the pleura or instill medications into the pleural cavity. As we cover this topic for the NCLEX exam, we will define what the pleural cavity is, discuss what causes a buildup of fluid in the pleural cavity and go over the steps involved in a thoracentesis procedure. Once you have watched this NCLEX test prep video, you should be able to confidently answer questions about pneumothorax, hypovolemic shock, pulmonary edema and patient care following the procedure.
