Answer each question and read through the answer explanation, whether you got the answer right or wrong. This will help you ensure you’ve got the topic mastered.

Whether you struggled with these questions or aced them on your first try, be sure to take the full practice test to get a better idea of how prepared you really are!

1. Which is the best version of sentence 5?

(1) “Imagine” tells the story of John Lennon's dream of peace in the world. (2) He asks the listener to imagine different situations. (3) He says to imagine that there are no countries, religions, or possessions. (4) He says, “I wonder if you can.” (5) This line strikes me the most I try to imagine such a world.

The sentence is missing the article "as." This is the simplest way to express the idea of the sentence.

Choices B and C are incorrect because the sentences are not grammatically correct.

2. What correction should be made to the sentence below?

In Ruth Campbell’s book Exploring the Titanic, the events of the famous ship’s only journey and sinking are brought to life.

A comma is needed to separate the interjection of the book title.

"Ship" in the sentence is possessive and requires the apostrophe. "Are" is the plural of "is." The subject, "events," is plural and therefore the verb needs to be plural in subject-verb agreement. "Are brought" is in the past participle, and "bring" is in the present tense.

3. Read the passage below before answering the question:

Closed Book Icon Read Passage
(1) George Washington and all of the other great leaders who fought in the Revolutionary War would be very disappointed in Americans today. (2) The right to choose who will represent us in government has lost its importance. (3) Too many people do not vote in elections and are just throwing away their right our founding fathers fought to give them. (4) Why anyone would do such a thing is beyond me. (5) If people do not stand up and choose their own leaders, someone else will do it for them: and who knows what those leaders will stand for? (6) Many people struggled and died to give us the right to vote, and we should always honor that sacrifice by voting in every election.

(7) The main purpose of the Revolutionary War was to freely break from rulers who did not give their people a say in their own government. (8) British colonists in America lived far away from their leaders in the British Parliament, and could not have a physical presence in government due to the distance between America and England. (9) This led to a denial of the rights that these colonists would have had if they still lived in England. (10) Tired of “taxation without representation,” as the popular slogan went during this time in history, the colonists felt so strongly that they should have a say in their government that they took up arms against their own countrymen and fought for their freedom.

(11) Today, Americans take the fact that they have had voting rights for over 200 years for granted. (12) That’s why voting isn’t as important as it was back in the day. (13) If you look at how other people and countries have all fought for the right to vote, and continue to do so even today, it’s plain to see that voting is something that should still be important in our society. (14) I hope that my generation will be the first of many to make voting one of our most important and treasured rights once again.

Which of the following sentences should be removed in order to maintain the focus of the passage?

This sentence is a personal aside by the author, which is unnecessary and does not help with the argument being put forth by the author. It is best to remove this sentence to maintain a focus on the author’s argument that more people need to exercise their right to vote.
