GACE Middle Grades Science Exam Outline

The GACE Middle Grades Science exam is made of three testlets, which you can take individually in different sessions or all at once in one session. The total combined time limit is 2 hours and 45 minutes, and the total number of questions is 110.

Physical Science

(Testlet 105)

There are 40 selected-response questions in this testlet, and you’ll be timed at 1 hour. These questions test your knowledge and abilities regarding the following:

  • Physical and chemical properties of matter
  • Organization of the periodic table
  • Characteristics of elements, compounds, and mixtures
  • The conservation of matter in chemical reactions
  • Chemical formulas and equations
  • Phase changes
  • Kinetic molecular theory as it applies to solid, liquid, and gaseous states of matter
  • The law of conservation of energy
  • Different forms of energy
  • Transfer of energy
  • Characteristics of electrical charge and static electricity
  • The effects of mirrors, lenses, and prisms on the behavior of light

Life Science

There are 40 selected-response questions in this testlet, and you’ll be timed at 1 hour. These questions test your knowledge and abilities regarding the following:

  • The relation of specialized cells to their various functions
  • Eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells
  • Structure and functions of plant and animal cells and systems
  • The interactions between body systems to carry out body processes
  • Obtaining, using, and storing matter and energy as an organism
  • Maintaining homeostasis
  • Basic principles of heredity
  • The importance of variation of traits in a given species
  • Principles of and evidence for biological evolution
  • Characteristics of terrestrial and aquatic biomes
  • Biotic and abiotic factors that affect population dynamics in ecosystems
  • The effect of human activity on individual organisms, populations, communities, and ecosystems

Earth and Space Science

(Testlet 107)

There are 30 selected-response questions in this testlet, and you’ll be timed at 45 minutes. These questions test your knowledge and abilities regarding the following:

  • Characteristics of stars and the evolution of galaxies
  • Interactions of the sun, moon, and the Earth
  • The role of gravity and inertia in the solar systems and the universe
  • Supporting the timeline of Earth’s geologic history using geologic evidence
  • Tectonic processes
  • The rock cycle and characteristics of various types of rock
  • Processes that shape the Earth’s surface
  • Physical processes and interactions of the hydrologic cycle
  • Processes and characteristics of marine and freshwater systems
  • Layers of Earth’s atmosphere
  • Atmospheric conditions and geographic factors that produce weather
  • The impact of climate changes on Earth’s systems
  • Factors that contribute to global warming and its impact on Earth

Exam Registration

To register for the exam, you need to use your MyPSC account. If you do not have an account, create your account to receive your Georgia certification number. After you register for the Middle Grades Science exam on MyPSC, create an ETS GACE testing account. Your ETS account lists the test(s) you are approved to take. You will register for the exam through your ETS GACE testing account.

Fees

You can register to take the tests individually ($23.50) or combined ($84.50). Your test fee includes a $25 registration fee and a $28 test center fee. Individuals taking the GACE exam at an international testing site are subject to an additional $50 test site fee.

Test Day

You should arrive at the testing center on exam day 15-30 minutes before your scheduled exam. If you arrive later than the listed reporting time on your admission ticket, you will not be able to take the exam and your testing fees will be forfeited.

During the check-in process, you will be asked to provide at least one form of valid identification, which must contain your photo and signature. Once the check-in process is complete, you will be asked to place all personal items in a secure locker outside the testing room.

Once you are ready, the proctor will lead you to the testing area and provide some short instructions before starting the exam.

How the Exam is Scored

When you have completed your exam, you are given the option to report or cancel your scores. They cannot be reinstated if you choose to cancel your scores.

You should also receive an unofficial score report right after the exam. Your official report will be made available about three weeks after the testing window closes.

Passing Score

Your final score for the full exam will be a scaled score between 100 and 300. For the GACE Middle Grades Science exam, the passing score is 220.
