FTCE Middle Grades English 5-9 Practice Test
The purpose of the FTCE Middle Grades English 5-9 Exam is to ensure a teacher is qualified (content and pedagogical-wise) to instruct students in this subject area.
This exam is administered via computer, and consists of two sections. For the multiple-choice section, you will be given 1.5 hours to complete 80 questions. The written performance section requires that you write one essay, in one hour.
In order to be eligible to request special accommodations, an examinee’s physical or mental disability must be covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act, and verified by a licensed psychologist or physician as a disability that requires these accommodations.
What content areas does this exam evaluate?
Competencies 1-6 are for the multiple-choice section. Competency 7 is for the written performance section.
Competency 1: Grasp of qualities of students in order come up with instructional decisions for teaching and learning.
Skills such as determining the qualities of cognitive, social, and emotional development that impact student learning.
Competency 2: Grasp of evidence-based research and best practices when teaching.
Skills such as applying evidence-based research when choosing technology, and implementing effective methods for teaching diverse student populations.
Competency 3: Grasp of content related to language arts.
Skills such as analyzing the qualities of various genres, and making a distinction between different forms of writing.
Competency 4: Grasp of pedagogical content for teaching.
Skills such as choosing the right strategies to teach English, and use proper strategies in pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, etc.
Competency 5: Grasp of assessments and using them in instructional decisions.
Skills such as selecting formal and informal assessments, scrutinizing the results of formal and informal assessments, and determining ways to share the outcomes of student assessment information.
Competency 6: Grasp of using collaboration in reading and writing.
Skills such as teaching the meaning of words, phrases and paragraphs, and identifying how text structure affects comprehension.
Competency 7: Prove the ability to critically respond.
Skills such as organizing ideas, utilizing details and evidence in the text to support a thesis statement, and using particular style to capture a reader’s interest.
How can I register for this exam?
Do so online. Once you’ve registered, you can choose the site, date, and time of when you would like to take the exam. You will also have the opportunity to select having your scores sent to your PDCP.
What is the cost of the exam?
The cost of taking both sections of the test for the first time is $200. If it is necessary to re-test, the fee is $150 for a single section, and $220 for both sections.
What are the testing dates and locations?
Testing for the FTCE Middle Grades English 5-9 Exam is offered at various sites through the state of Florida. There are also locations in other states that you may choose from. The date on which you take the exam is up to you and the normal business hours of the site you choose.
What should I do the day of the exam?
As with all exams, you must arrive at the site when you are scheduled to take the exam. Different sites have different rules, but typically, arriving 15 minutes late can disqualify you from taking the exam that day.
Two forms of identification will be necessary in order for you to sign in and take the exam.
To avoid being dismissed from the center, be sure to consult with the site about what items are not allowed in the testing area.
