FTCE Exceptional Student Education K-12 Practice Test

The Florida Teacher Certification Exam (FTCE) is a series of content and application-based exams for the state of Florida that provides prospective educators the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in general education and subject area knowledge.

The Exceptional Student Education K-12 is developed by the state of Florida to reflect the requirements of the state, aligned with the student content standards approved by the Florida State Board.

Test Design

The Exceptional Student K-12 exam is a 2.5-hour computer-based test (CBT) which consists of approximately 120 multiple-choice questions. Your scheduled appointment time for the exam will be longer than the amount of testing time allowed. This accounts for checking in and observing a short tutorial before beginning the exam. The multiple choice questions come from the following competencies:

  • Knowledge of foundations of exceptional student education – 24%
  • Knowledge of assessment and evaluation – 13%
  • Knowledge of instructional practices in exceptional student education – 21%
  • Knowledge of the positive behavioral support process – 12%
  • Knowledge of multiple literacies and communication skills – 22%
  • Knowledge of the transition process – 8%

The cost for the first attempt is $150.00. Should you need to retake the exam, or if you are recertifying, it is $150.00.

Test Day

You must report to the testing center 30 minutes before your examination time. You will need to have two forms of non-expired identification, printed in English, with your middle initial identified on at least one form of the identification. You will have your photograph taken, and your palm vein scanned. You may be asked to remove your glasses for visual inspection, and you will be asked to place all personal items in the provided secure storage. You are allowed no personal items in the testing facility. This includes, but is not limited to, cell phones, purses, and wallets.

After your identification has been verified, you’ll be assigned to your station, and you’ll be provided with an erasable notepad and pen, and any other materials needed for your exam by the test proctor. You will read and sign the non-disclosure agreement. You will have five minutes to read and sign the agreement. Should you not complete this in the allotted time, your test will be canceled and your registration fee forfeited. At the conclusion of the exam, you will return all materials provided.

Once you enter the testing center and take your seat, you are not allowed to talk to any other test taker. Should you have a question or need additional supplies, you must raise your hand for assistance. Failure to follow the test center rules could result in the cancellation of your test and your registration fee forfeited.

While the exam does not include a scheduled break, you may take a restroom break if necessary. Keep in mind that the time you take during your break comes out of the total test time.

Scoring and Results

The number of correct answers (raw score) is converted to a common measure or scale score. You must obtain a scale score of 200 to pass the Exceptional Student Education K-12 exam. The results are posted as “pass” or “not pass” with a numerical score being identified only in the case of “not pass”.

Score reports are released within four weeks of testing. You will receive a report via your account, and the results will be reported to the Department of Education’s Bureau of Educator Certification. However, only passing scores will be reported. Should you wish for your results to be provided to your district/college, you will have to request it when you initially register for the exam.
