The ACT is one of the most well-known standardized college entrance exams in the United States. The exam is a paper and pencil test administered across the nation in a variety of designated testing facilities. As such, there are several different dates to consider when planning to take the ACT exam. Choosing the right test date will help ensure you have enough time to prepare for exam day success. The scores you need for college admissions are dependent on the requirements of the colleges to which you are applying. So, choosing the right test date and giving yourself enough time to prepare are extremely important steps in your college admissions process.
What are the ACT test dates for 2019?
There are several ACT test dates for 2019. Registering by the designated deadline is your best choice; however, there are also late registration and standby registration options. For late registration, all registration materials must be received by the final date of the late registration period, regardless of postmark. Make sure to plan ahead as well as you can. Standby registration requires that you upload a photo of yourself to your ACT online account, and you may or may not be admitted to the exam come test day; standby testing occurs on a first-come, first-served basis.
*Please note that there are no tests scheduled for the February or July test dates in New York, and there is no test center scheduled for the July date in California. Make sure to plan ahead if you live in one of these two states.
How do I choose the right ACT test date?
Typically, the first time you take the ACT will be during the spring of your junior year of high school. You will receive your test scores within two to eight weeks, which should give you enough time to retake the test if necessary. This should highlight the importance of registering for the test as early as possible. Regular decision college application deadlines usually fall between January 1st and January 15th. If you are taking the exam as a junior, you have time to take the test in April, June, July, September, or October. However, if you are a senior in high school, you will need to choose a fall test date if you are aiming for the regular decision application deadline.
Some students aim for early decision or early action deadlines for college applications. Usually, this deadline falls between November 1st and December 15th. In this case, you will want to choose an April, June, July, or September test date. October scores may or may not be accepted, so make sure to check with the colleges to which you are applying. The final caveat is the University of California System, which has an application period between November 1st and November 30th. If you are applying to a UC school, make sure to take your ACT exam in April, June, July, or September; again, October scores may be accepted, but you will need to check with the colleges to which you are applying.
For late decision or rolling admissions, you will need to check with the colleges to which you are applying. Just remember, you want to give yourself enough time to register for the ACT, prepare for the ACT, and receive your scores. If you want to retake the exam, which may need to occur if you score below the 50th percentile, for instance, you will want to plan ahead. Make sure to give yourself enough time to complete the entire process of registering, preparing, testing, and applying to colleges. A delay in taking the ACT exam might lead to a delay in your college application process.
