GACE English Exam Outline

The GACE English (6-12) exam is made of three testlets, which you can take individually in different sessions or all at once in one session. The total combined time limit is 2 hours and 15 minutes, and the total number of questions is 100.

Reading and Analysis of Texts

(Testlet 218)

There are 40 questions in this testlet, and you’ll be timed at 1 hour. These questions test your knowledge and abilities regarding the following:

  • Organizational structures and text features of informational and argumentative texts
  • The development of central ideas, positions, and claims in texts
  • Assessing credibility, objectivity, and reliability of sources
  • Evaluating relevance, importance, and sufficiency of supporting evidence, examples, and reasons
  • Identifying accurate and objective summaries of texts
  • Interpreting graphic features used in texts
  • Analyzing rhetorical devices and techniques
  • Characteristics of various literary genres
  • The contribution of literary devices to meaning, point of view, purpose, and tone
  • The use and impact of structural elements in fiction, drama, and poetry
  • Denotative, connotative, and figurative meanings of words and phrases
  • The development and interaction of plot, setting, and character
  • Analyzing how word choice affects meaning, tone, and mood
  • Analyzing how authors have explored significant social, cultural, and political events and issues throughout their writing

Writing, Research, and Multimedia Texts

(Testlet 219)

There are 35 questions in this testlet, and you’ll be timed at 45 minutes. These questions test your knowledge and abilities regarding the following:

  • Processes for planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing texts
  • Structures and purposes of argumentative, informative, and narrative writing
  • Selecting and maintaining style, tone, voice, and diction
  • Academic English conventions
  • Introducing and supporting claims in texts
  • Anticipating and responding to potential questions, concerns, and counterarguments
  • Using effective and varied transitions
  • Using dialogue, details, sensory language, and reflection
  • Developing research questions
  • Locating relevant sources and information
  • Assessing credibility, objectivity, and reliability of sources
  • Ways in which components of media can be manipulated to alter or misrepresent information
  • Organizing multimodal presentations
  • Incorporating various media into presentations

Language, Speaking, and Listening

(Testlet 220)

There are 25 questions in this testlet, and you’ll be timed at 30 minutes. These questions test your knowledge and abilities regarding the following:

  • General academic and content-specific vocabulary
  • Syntactic rules, word structure, and contextual analysis
  • Research-based strategies to use before, during, and after reading a text
  • Constructing meaning from multiple types of texts
  • The components of reading fluency
  • Language acquisition theories
  • Specific cognitive and social processes that affect language development
  • The role of various factors in adolescents’ and young adults’ language use
  • Facilitating and participating in collaborative academic discussions
  • Incorporating effective language styles, rhetoric devices, and verbal and nonverbal techniques into presentations

Exam Registration

TTo register for the GACE English exam, you need to create a MyPSC account. Once you’ve created your account, you’ll receive your Georgia certification ID number and be able to submit a request for testing eligibility.

Once you have been approved for the English exam, you can register to take the test by creating an Evaluation Systems GACE testing account.

Fees

You can register to take the testlets individually ($56.50) or combined ($169). Individuals taking the GACE exam at an international testing site are subject to an additional $50 test site fee.

Test Day

On testing day, you should report to the testing center 15-30 minutes before your scheduled exam. If you arrive later than the listed reporting time on your admission ticket, you will not be able to take the exam and your testing fees will be forfeited.

During the check-in process, you will be asked to provide at least one form of valid identification, which must contain your photo and signature. Once the check-in process is complete, you will be asked to place all personal items (cell phone, wallet, keys, bags, accessories etc.) in a secure locker outside the testing room.

Once you are ready, the proctor will lead you to the testing area and provide some short instructions before starting the exam.

How the Exam is Scored

When you have completed your exam, you are given the option to report or cancel your scores. They cannot be reinstated if you choose to cancel your scores.

You should also receive an unofficial score report right after the exam. Your official report will be made available about three weeks after the testing window closes.

Passing Score

Your final score for the full exam will be a scaled score between 100 and 300. For the GACE English exam, the passing score is 220.
