GACE Educational Leadership Exam Outline

The GACE Educational Leadership—Tier I exam is made of four subareas. The time limit is 3 hours and 45 minutes, and the total number of questions is 93.

I. Visionary, Collaborative, and Ethical Leadership (20%)

These questions test your knowledge and abilities regarding the following:

  • Providing leadership in developing, advocating for, and enacting a shared mission, vision, and statement of core values
  • Collaborating with stakeholders
  • Mobilizing school and community resources
  • The legal dimensions of educational leadership
  • The interplay of the political, social, economic, ethical, and cultural contexts of education

II. Student and Staff Learning (27%)

These questions test your knowledge and abilities regarding the following:

  • Cultivating a welcoming and supportive culture of learning that emphasizes high expectations
  • Effective teaching and learning
  • Using instructional leadership to promote academic success and well-being
  • Using professional development for faculty, staff, and self to promote lifelong learning

III. Systems and Resource Management (23%)

These questions test your knowledge and abilities regarding the following:

  • Organizational management and its use in creating positive and productive learning systems
  • Human resources management
  • Operational and resource management

IV. Planning Documents, Success for All Students, and Management Problem-Solving (30%)

These questions are constructed-response, meaning you will be asked to write out your answer in about 150-300 words per question. There are three main objectives covered in this subarea:

  • Develop planning documents that facilitate the work of educators, staff members, families/caregivers, and educational leaders in support of a shared mission, vision, and core values of academic success and well-being.
  • Plan and implement strategies for promoting the academic success and well-being of every student
  • Apply systems and resource management strategies to address management challenges faced by schools and school districts

Exam Registration

To register for the GACE Educational Leadership—Tier I exam, you need to create a MyPSC account. Once you’ve created your account, you’ll receive your Georgia certification ID number and be able to submit a request for testing eligibility.

Once you have been approved for the exam, you can register to take the test by creating an Evaluation Systems GACE testing account.

Fees

When you register, you’ll need to pay the $263 test fee. Individuals taking the GACE exam at an international testing site are subject to an additional $50 test site fee.

Test Day

You should arrive at the testing center about 30 minutes before your scheduled exam to allow extra time for the check-in process. If you arrive later than the listed reporting time on your admission ticket, you will not be able to take the exam and your testing fees will be forfeited.

During the check-in process, you will be asked to provide at least one form of valid identification, which must contain your photo and signature. Once the check-in process is complete, you will be asked to place all personal items (cell phone, keys, wallet, etc.) in a locker outside the testing room.

Once you are ready, the proctor will lead you to the testing area and provide some short instructions before starting the exam.

How the Exam is Scored

When you have completed your exam, you are given the option to report or cancel your scores. They cannot be reinstated if you choose to cancel your scores.

You should also receive an unofficial score report right after the exam. Your official report will be made available about three weeks after the testing window closes.

Passing Score

Your final score for the full exam will be a scaled score between 100 and 300. For the GACE Educational Leadership—Tier I exam, the passing score is 250.
