GRE Question of the Day

GRE Question of the Day

Answer

  1. Quantity A is greater

In a set containing an odd number of values, the median is the value that falls in the middle when they are placed in numerical order. Therefore, the median of these three numbers is 56. The mean is calculated by adding the three numbers together and dividing by 3. The mean is:

\(\frac{55+56+58}{3}=\frac{169}{3}\) \(\approx 56.3\)

Therefore, the mean is larger, and Quantity A is greater than Quantity B.

Review the question

Compare Quantity A and Quantity B and select one of the following four answer choices.

Quantity A

The arithmetic mean (average) of 55, 56, and 58.

Quantity B

The median of 55, 56, and 58.

  1. Quantity A is greater.
  2. Quantity B is greater.
  3. The two quantities are equal.
  4. The relationship cannot be determined from the information given.
