RHIT Certification: The Definitive Guide

I think you’ll agree with me when I say:

Studying for ANY exam is hard!

It turns out that there are different ways that you can become prepared for the RHIT.

And that’s why we’ve put together the RHIT Certification: The Definitive Guide.

– The pass rate for the RHIT Certification exam was 70% among first-time test-takers in 2017.

– The cost to take the RHIT Certification exam is $75.

– You must have completed the academic requirements at an associate’s degree level of a Health Information Management program or graduate from a HIM program that is approved by AHIMA before applying to take the RHIT Certification exam.

A Registered Health Information Technician helps to manage electronic health records that are used in hospitals, physician’s offices, nursing homes, and mental health clinics. RHITs manage the information that deals with medical decisions, service referrals, and insurance disbursements. They are responsible for making sure that this confidential information of patients remains in the right place where the right people can access the information electronically and out of sight from the general public and the wrong people.

To become a Registered Health Information Technician, you’ll need to become certified and this means passing the RHIT Certification exam. While taking any certification exam can be stressful and daunting, we want to give you a few tips on how you can successfully pass the RHIT Certification exam.

1.Understand the Format of the RHIT Exam
Understanding the format of an exam is the first thing that you need to study. You’ll be able to get an idea as to what type of questions will be asked, the formatting of the questions (multiple-choice, fill in the blank, etc), as well as how many questions will be on the exam. Learning and understanding the format of the RHIT exam is one of the important things when it comes to passing the certification exam.

Here are a few things you need to know about the RHIT Certification exam:

• There are 150 multiple-choice questions which include 20 pretest questions that do not count towards your final score.
• You are given 3.5 hours to complete the 150 questions.
• The questions on the RHIT Certification exam cover seven topic areas.

2. RHIT Study Guide
Another component of passing the RHIT Certification exam is to use a study guide that is geared towards the RHIT exam itself. Using a study guide will allow you to dig deeper into key concepts such as coding guidelines, HIM processes and more. You’ll also be able to brush up on areas that you may need a quick review in or that you may be unfamiliar with.

3. Know the Types of Questions
The RHIT Certification exam is multiple-choice, and even though each question contains four possible answers, there are actually three different cognitive levels of questions that will be asked.

• Recall: Recall questions are just that. They are questions that are designed for you to test your memory and your ability to retain information. You’ll be required to identify terms, specific facts, procedures, basic theories, etc.
• Application: Application questions use more critical thinking skills than recall questions do. You will need to apply the facts that you have learned to a situation. You will be required to answer questions that apply to theories, rules, or formulas.
• Analysis: Analysis questions measure your application of knowledge when it comes to solving a specific problem. Some of the questions may require you to develop a solution to a problem and some may ask demand a series of calculations.

4. Set a Study Schedule
After you have set the appointment for you to take the RHIT Certification exam, work backward from this date to set up a study schedule. You’ll need to put aside a number of hours that you can commit to studying for the exam leading up until the night before the exam. Many people like to set aside 2 to 3 hours each night to study and plan to schedule a different area each night. This way you will give yourself enough time to prepare and you’ll be able to get each section into your study plan. When you work out a plan that best benefits you, make sure that you stick to it!

5. RHIT Flashcards
Repetition is one of the most effective forms of learning and that’s where flashcards come into play when you’re studying for an exam. They allow you to compete with yourself to see if you understand and grasp the concepts and topics of the exam by helping you focus on one concept at a time. Flashcards will come in handy when it’s time for you to study the health data management or health statistics areas of the RHIT Certification exam.

6. Pace Yourself
You will be given 3.5 hours to complete the 150 questions that are on the RHIT Certification exam. While you may be tempted to go as fast as you can on the exam, that won’t work towards your benefit when it comes to your score. You need to pace yourself during the entire exam. Work on the questions that you know or that you may be certain of. If you have problems answering a question, take a couple of minutes to focus on it, and then mark that question for review and move on if you still can’t come up with the answer. If you have time after finishing the exam, go back to the questions that you marked for review and see if you can answer them.

7. Attend a Review Session
Many colleges or universities offer a review session or course for those who want to take the RHIT Certification exam. If you do decide to take a review session, make sure to take notes and ask any questions about areas that you may not understand. On top of studying with flashcards and a study guide, this is another thing that can greatly benefit you when it comes to passing the exam.

8. RHIT Practice Test
Just as with any other exam, it’s important to take advantage of practice tests when it comes to preparing for the RHIT Certification exam. Taking a practice test will give you the same formatting as the actual exam such as the same formatting of the questions and the same type of questions. Taking a practice test will help you with learning to pace yourself during the exam. You can do this by setting an alarm on your phone to go off at 3.5 hours. You’ll also get more of an idea as to which areas you need more time to study in. Once you figure that out, add some extra time to your study plan to study those areas.
