Exam Outline

The NES Assessment of Professional Knowledge Elementary exam contains 100 multiple-choice questions, one case study written assignment, and one work product written assignment, and you will be given a time limit of 3 hours.

The exam is split into three content domains.

I. Student Development and Learning (24%)

The questions in this domain cover the following:

  • Processes of human development
  • Variations in student development
  • Learning processes
  • Factors that can affect student learning and performance
  • Student diversity
  • Providing instructional environments and experiences that promote all students’ development, learning, and achievement

II. Assessment, Instruction, and the Learning Environment (50%)

The questions in this domain cover the following:

  • Assessment instruments and practices
  • The relationship between assessment and instruction
  • Using assessment to guide instruction and monitor students’ learning progress
  • Principles and procedures of curricular and instructional planning
  • Designing instruction that promotes all students’ learning and achievement
  • Principles and practices associated with various instructional approaches
  • Principles and practices of motivation and communication
  • Structuring and managing the classroom to establish a safe, inclusive, and positive environment

III. The Professional Environment (26%)

The questions in this domain cover the following:

  • Establishing partnerships and collaborating effectively with families, colleagues, and members of the community to enhance and support student learning
  • Roles and expectations for professional educators
  • Legal and ethical guidelines
  • Strategies for continuous professional growth and self-reflection

Registration

To register for the NES Assessment of Professional Knowledge exam, you must first create an online account on the NES website. You may then register for your examination appointment with Pearson VUE.

The testing fee for this exam is $95.

Test Day

On exam day, should arrive at the Pearson VUE testing center 15-30 minutes before the exam is scheduled to begin. Once you arrive, you must sign in and present your photo ID to the proctor. You will be photographed and asked to sign a roster and other rule forms.

Personal items are not allowed in the testing room, so they should be left at home or in your car. This includes your phone and any bags, books, keys, wallets, and accessories.

Just before the exam starts, you will be given a brief tutorial on the testing system. You will also be given everything you need to work out any calculations by hand (no calculator will be provided).

How the Exam is Scored

Your NES score is determined using a scaled scoring method. This method takes your raw score, which is the number of questions you answered correctly, and converts it to a numerical score on a scale of 100 to 300. To pass, your final score must be at least 220.
