Word Problems and Addition
When working on a word problem, there are a few words that can cue you in on the fact that you will be adding. Some of these words and phrases include: more than, increased by, sum, total, and in all. For example, if the question says, “A number is 4 more than 16. What is the number?” the use of ‘more than’ allows you to know that you will be adding 4 and 16. So 4 + 16 = 20.
