Wonderlic Scholastic Level Exam

The Wonderlic SLE is an exam that is given to students for admissions and placement purposes.

Similar to an IQ test, but with far less questions, the Wonderlic exam measures a student’s cognitive abilities. Because the exam is a good predictor of academic success, thousands of schools use Wonderlic to help qualify students for educational programs.

The exam also increases job placement rates, and reduces school loan defaults.

Is it mandatory that I take the exam?

If you learn that you need to take the Wonderlic SLE, then most likely it’s a requirement of your school, and other students will be taking it too.

The whole purpose of the exam is to measure how efficiently a student can understand information given to them. The exam also measures how quickly you’re able to learn new material, and if you’re ready to deal with the demands that come with school.

Not taking the exam may cause your application to be rejected.

Do I have to pay to take it?

No. The exam is given at no cost to you.

How many questions are on the exam? Should I expect to be testing for hours?

No way. The Wonderlic exam is all about speed, and how swiftly you can answer questions. The exam lasts 12 minutes and consists of 50 questions.

There is also a Wonderlic Quicktest, (SLE-Q), which is an unproctored pretest that can be taken from home. This test is shorter than the actual Wonderlic exam and consists of 30 questions with an 8-minute time limit. The types of questions are no different than the ones you will find on the Wonderlic SLE.

It’s important to know that not all students are able to finish either exam in the given amount of time, so make sure you have a strategy that will help you finish.

What kind of questions will be on the Exam?

The Wonderlic SLE tests:

  • Basic reasoning
  • Reading comprehension, and
  • Math skills

You should be prepared to encounter:

  • Vocabulary
  • Sentence formation
  • Common sense questions, and
  • Algebra

The questions are, for the most part, multiple choice, but a few – like the math questions – may be open ended.

I’m not a huge fan of math. Can I use a calculator?

Unfortunately, no. The exam is given to assess your abilities without the help of a calculator. You will, however, be allowed to use scrap paper to work out math problems.

If not being allowed to use a calculator makes you nervous, don’t worry. In a little while, I’ll supply you with all the study resources you’ll need to pass your exam with a grade you’re more than satisfied with.

How is the exam scored?

The exam is scored on a scale of 0 to 50, with 50 being the highest score you can get. Each question on the exam has the same point value and is scored by how many questions you correctly answer.

This means that if you don’t know the answer to a question, you won’t lose points if you guess.

Ideally, you want to aim for a 21 or higher. Keep in mind that it depends on the school you’re trying to get into, so the passing score may be different.

How is the exam given?

The exam may be computer-based, or paper and pencil. Either way, you will be taking the exam on-site with a proctor present.

Because the Wonderlic SLE-Q exam is not a proctored exam, it is strictly computer-based.

Keep in mind that you only have about 15 seconds to answer each of the questions, so make sure you are well prepared.

Quick tip:

Since the Wonderlic SLE/SLE-Q is only an 8 to 12-minute exam, it’s important to work on your time management. Don’t spend too long on one question.

If you don’t immediately know the answer to something, skip it and come back to it later, but only if time permits.

So, about those study resources…

The best way to pass the Wonderlic SLE is to practice and prepare. The students who familiarize themselves with the exam’s content prior to taking it, are the ones that normally pass the first time around.

If you need help preparing, Mometrix has a ton of practice tests to help you familiarize yourself with the type of material you’ll see on the day of the exam.

Because the Wonderlic Exam is fast-paced, you may want to utilize flashcards to help you retain information quickly.

Mometrix can help you with that too. Our flashcards are detailed and designed to be easily understood.

The good thing about Mometrix products is that the study guides and flashcards give you all the topics you must know, so that there are no surprises.
