TEAS V Math ReviewDoing well on the TEAS V mathematics section is crucial to achieving a high overall score on this important exam. Good scores on the other three sections may not be enough to compensate for a poor score in math, so being thoroughly prepared for the math portion of the TEAS V test is critical to realizing your dream of becoming a nurse. Well-developed math skills are necessary for a career in nursing, because in healthcare, even seemingly minor mistakes with numbers can have harmful or even fatal consequences. Now, you won’t need to worry about topics like trigonometry, statistics, calculus, or other advanced math concepts. Math topics covered on the TEAS exam range from basic math operations through algebra. On the other hand, don’t underestimate the challenge you’ll be facing. Many people have made the mistake of taking the math portion for granted, and wound up not getting into nursing school due to a poor showing on this part of the test. TEAS Math is difficult, but with proper preparation, any person who passed high school math should be able to get a good score on this section. To help make sure you succeed, we’ve provide a lot of free videos at the top of this page that can provide an excellent foundation for your TEAS math review.
What’s on the TEAS V Math Section?You’ll have about 50 minutes to answer approximately 30-35 questions on this part of the TEAS V. Each version of the test contains 20 experimental questions that don’t count toward your score, and it’s likely that some of these will be in the math section. However, there is no way for you to know which questions count, and which don’t, so always assume the question counts. As stated above, there is no highly advanced math, like trig or calculus. The highest level of knowledge required to do well on the test is high school algebra. If algebra isn’t your strong suit, don’t despair. For one thing, with proper preparation and regular review, you should be able to strengthen your skills in this area. Secondly, only about 13% of the math questions will be on algebra (about 4-6). Another 12-13% will be about data interpretation, and 12-13% will be on measurement. The bulk of the TEAS math section, about 60%, will cover numbers and operations.
TEAS V Math: Numbers and OperationsEssentially, questions about numbers and operations cover the range of math you’re likely to encounter in your everyday life, and/or on the job as a nurse. This includes the very basics, of course – addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using whole numbers. Naturally, there will be a lot of word problems in TEAS V Math, which will test your mathematical reasoning abilities. You’ll also need a thorough grasp of percentages, decimals, and fractions – how to calculate percentages and changes in percentages, how to solve word problems involving percentages, how to change percentages into decimals and fractions, etc.
For decimals, you’ll need to know where the decimal goes in order to select the correct answer on some questions. You’ll be expected to know how to multiply and divide decimals, and use your skills in this area to solve word problems. You’ll also need to know how to change decimals into fractions or percentages. When it comes to fractions (and mixed numbers), you’ll need to know how to add them, how to subtract them, and how to multiply and divide them. With problems involving all of these functions, you may be dealing with different denominators. You’ll need to understand how to convert a mixed number into a fraction, as well as how to convert fractions into percentages and decimals. You should definitely expect to see some word problems involving fractions.
Here are some of the more practical subjects you might encounter on TEAS V Math: You’ll need to know how to balance a checkbook, and read and interpret numbers on such things as bus schedules, menus, etc. You may see some questions about how to interpret the data on your paycheck stub involving taxes, Social Security, and other deductions. Given a set of parameters, you’ll be expected to accurately estimate quantities and expenditures that will be required to complete a described task or reach a stated goal.
It may seem hard to believe in this day and age, but you’ll also need to know how to read Roman numerals, and convert them into regular (Arabic) numerals, and vice versa. Do you know what PEMDAS stands for? It’s an acronym that helps you solve problems involving multiple operations, and you’ll want to have it down pat. You’ll also need to understand the differences between rational and irrational numbers, and how to convert irrational numbers into decimals. In addition, you’ll be expected to understand, and solve problems involving ratios, rates, and proportions.
TEAS V Math: Data InterpretationIn real life, whether at home or on the job as a nurse, you’ll rarely encounter math challenges in the form of word problems or equations. So you’ll need to know how to interpret and use data in various forms. On the TEAS math test, you’ll find a few problems requiring some skill in reading and interpreting visual displays of data such as graphs, tables, and charts.
TEAS V Math: MeasurementMeasuring, and understanding measurements, are very important skills in healthcare, which you’ll probably use several times a day. Accordingly, you’ll find a small number of questions about measuring on the math portion of the TEAS exam. You’ll need to be very familiar with the various units of measurement for height, weight, length, and volume. Can you convert English units to metric units in all these areas, and vice versa? If not, you’ll want to review them thoroughly until you can, because this is an important area of knowledge in healthcare, and will probably come up on the TEAS. You’ll also want to be sure you know how to measure things yourself, and which tools you’ll use to do so, and how to use one measurement to derive another one.
TEAS V Math: Algebraic ApplicationsIt may seem as if you’ll never have much occasion to use algebra in your duties as a nurse. And to be perfectly frank, you probably won’t need to refer to your knowledge of algebra very often after entering the healthcare field. In fact, many nurses will probably never again perform any algebraic calculations after earning their degree. The fact remains, though, that nursing schools teach advanced math classes, and you’ll need to pass these in order to graduate. A solid foundation in high school level algebra is a necessity before attempting these much tougher courses, which is why the TEAS exam includes a small number of questions about algebra. You’ll need to be able to take a sentence and convert it into an equation (or an expression or inequality), and vice versa. Some problems will present a typical algebra equation, and you’ll be required to solve for an unknown. Some of these may involve absolute values. You’ll also need to know how to add, subtract, divide, and multiply using polynomials.
Make no mistake; the math section of the TEAS V exam is very challenging, and you’ll want to take your time and prepare thoroughly before taking the test. Take advantage of the videos above to help you do your very best.
