What are the eligibility requirements to take the Nursing Professional Development exam?
Candidates must meet all of the following requirements:
- A current, active RN license in the United States or a legally recognized equivalent from another country.
- Bachelor’s or higher degree in nursing.
- Registered nurse work experience equivalent to 2 years full-time.
- Within the last five years, a minimum of 4,000 hours of clinical practice in nursing professional development.
- In the last three years, completion of 30 hours of continuing education in nursing professional development.
How do I register to take the exam?
If a candidate does not already have an account with the American Nurse Association (ANA), an account will need to be created. Once an account is created online, an application to test can be submitted. The candidate will be notified when the application and eligibility requirements have been verified. Once verification is received, the candidate will have 90 days to schedule a test date.
What credential is received by passing the exam?
Upon successful completion of the exam, the candidate is awarded the credential: Registered Nurse-Board Certified (RN-BC).
What is the cost of the exam?
For ANA members, the cost of the exam is $270. The cost for Association for Nursing Professional Development members is $340. The exam cost for non-members is $395.
Where do I take the exam?
The exam is administered by Prometric at various testing locations throughout the United States and the world. Test candidates can choose the test location most convenient for them.
Do I need to bring anything with me to the exam?
Upon arrival to the test location, all candidates must present an acceptable form of identification such as a driver’s license or passport. Candidates cannot bring anything into the exam room including books, papers, cell phones, food, and drink. A dry-erase board will be provided for note taking during the exam.</p.
What is the exam format and how many questions are on the exam?
There are 175 multiple-choice questions on the computer-based exam. Twenty-five of these questions are pretest questions and are not scored; however, there is no indication of which questions are pretest questions so all questions should be answered to the best of your knowledge.
What is the time allowance to complete the exam?
A total of 3 ½ hours is allowed to complete the exam.
What is the content of the exam?
The exam content consists of the following seven domains of practice.
- Education – 44 questions (29.33%)
- Leadership – 22 questions (14.67%)
- Communication – 19 questions (12.67%)
- Ethical/Legal – 30 questions (20%)
- Practice and Process Improvement – 13 questions (8.67%)
- Technology – 11 questions (7.33%)
- Program and Project Management – 11 questions (7.33%)
How is the exam scored?
The 150 scored questions are used to calculate the final score. The 25 pretest questions are not scored and not included in the final exam score. Candidates receive a pass or fail result. If a candidate receives a fail, they will also receive some diagnostic feedback indicating how they scored on different test areas.
What if a passing score is not achieved?
Candidates who do not achieve a passing score on the exam can retest after 60 days. A candidate can test no more than three times in a 12 month period. The cost to retest is $270. Candidates must wait five days after testing before applying to retest.
Once I have passed the exam, how long is the credential valid?
The RN-BC credential is valid for five years.
