NES Physical Education Exam Outline

The NES Physical Education (506) exam contains 150 multiple-choice questions, and you will be given a 3-hour time limit.

The exam is split equally into four content domains.

I. Growth and Motor Development (25%)

The questions in this domain cover the following:

  • Stages and characteristics of human growth and development
  • Concepts and principles of anatomy and physiology as they relate to movement and physical fitness
  • Principles, sequences, and characteristics of motor development and motor learning

II. Movement Activities (25%)

The questions in this domain cover the following:

  • Fundamental movement concepts and skills
  • Principles of biomechanics
  • Principles, techniques, safety practices, activities, skills, and organizational strategies for recreational activities
  • Rhythmic movement and dance
  • Stunts, tumbling, and educational gymnastics

III. Lifelong Physical Fitness (25%)

The questions in this domain cover the following:

  • Components and principles of health-related physical fitness
  • Developing and maintaining physical activity/fitness and weight management plans
  • The relationship between physical activity and the development of responsible personal and social behaviors and traits

IV. The Physical Education Program (25%)

The questions in this domain cover the following:

  • How children and adolescents learn
  • Providing physical education opportunities that support cognitive, physical, emotional, and social development
  • Planning, implementing, and evaluating physical education instructional activities
  • Ethical, legal, professional, and safety guidelines and practices

NES Physical Education Exam Registration

To register for the NES Physical Education exam, you must first create an online account on the NES website. You may then register for your examination appointment with Pearson VUE.

The testing fee for this exam is $95.

Test Day

You should arrive at the Pearson VUE testing center about 30 minutes before the exam is scheduled to begin, which will give you enough time to complete the check-in process. Once you arrive, you must sign in and present your photo ID to the proctor. You will be photographed and asked to sign a roster and other rule forms.

Personal items are not allowed in the testing room, so they should be left at home or in your car.

Just before the exam starts, you will be given a brief tutorial on the testing system. You will also be given everything you need to work out any calculations by hand (no calculator will be provided).

How the NES Physical Education Exam is Scored

Your NES Physical Education score is determined using a scaled scoring method. This method takes your raw score, which is the number of questions you answered correctly, and converts it to a numerical score on a scale of 100 to 300. To pass, your final score must be at least 220.
