NES Early Childhood Exam Outline
The NES Early Childhood Education exam contains 160 multiple-choice questions, and you will be given a time limit of 4 hours.
The exam is split into two subtests, each containig 80 questions and a 2-hour time limit.
Subtest I (108)
The questions in this subtest are grouped into two domains:
I. Child Development, the Learning Environment, and Social and Emotional Skill Development (67%)
- The stages and progressions of child development
- Factors that influence children’s early development and learning
- Ways that young children construct knowledge, learn, and develop
- Creating positive learning environments that are safe and responsive
- Social and emotional development
- Appropriate and positive behavior practices that develop children’s competence
II. Professional Knowledge and Responsibilities (33%)
- Strategies for building positive and collaborative relationships with families, professionals, and community agencies and organizations
- The roles and responsibilities of early childhood educators
Subtest II (109)
The questions in this subtest are grouped into two domains:
I. Learning Across the Curriculum—Assessment Practices, Language and Literacy (57%)
- Using developmentally appropriate and authentic assessment strategies
- Language development in children
- Providing learning experiences and instruction that encourage all children’s language development and emergent literacy skills
- Early reading processes and concepts
- Strategies for developing all children’s reading and comprehension skills
- Early processes of written expression
- Strategies for developing all children’s writing competence
II. Learning Across the Curriculum—Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Physical Education, and the Arts (43%)
- Early mathematical concepts, processes, and skills
- Facilitating all children’s mathematical learning
- Social studies, science, technology, and engineering concepts and skills
- Facilitating and promoting all children’s learning about health, physical education, and the fine arts

Registration
To register for the exam, you must first create an online account on the NES website. You may then register for your examination appointment with Pearson VUE.
The testing fee for each subtest is $119.
Test Day
On exam day, you should arrive at the Pearson VUE testing center about 30 minutes before the exam is scheduled to begin. Once you arrive, you must sign in and present your photo ID to the proctor. You will be photographed and asked to sign a roster and other rule forms.
Personal items are not allowed in the testing room, so they should be left at home or in your car. This includes all electronic devices, bags, keys, wallet, hats, and bags.
Just before the exam starts, you will be given a brief tutorial on the testing system. You will also be given everything you need to work out any calculations by hand (no calculator will be provided).
How the Exam is Scored
Your NES score is determined using a scaled scoring method. This method takes your raw score, which is the number of questions you answered correctly, and converts it to a numerical score on a scale of 100 to 300. To pass, your final score must be at least 220 on each subtest.
