ILTS Reading Specialist Practice Test
Reading is a skill that every child needs in order to succeed in life. While most learn to read at a normal level, some students struggle. These children often benefit from a reading specialist. Reading specialists are specially trained to help students gain the skills they need to succeed. Those looking to teach in an Illinois classroom must pass the ILTS Reading Specialist Exam.
There are two versions of the ILTS Reading Specialist Test. The current one lasts until September 3, 2017. This computer-based exam consists of 125 multiple-choice questions that must be completed in three hours and 45 minutes. A score of 240 or higher is needed to pass. The updated version starts September 4 and is slightly different. It consists of 100 multiple-choice questions that must be completed in three hours and 15 minutes. The passing score remains at 240.
The updated test consists of five subareas: theoretical and research foundations, literate environment, reading assessment, reading instruction, and professional responsibilities and learning. You must be knowledgeable of topics such as foundations of reading instruction, how to use reading research, oral language foundations, literacy development, individual; differences and diversity, literacy development and instruction, educational environments that promote literacy, evaluating and managing resources, supporting effective reading instruction, foundations of reading assessment and essential components of reading development. You will also be assessed on diagnosing reading difficulties, principles of working with students with reading difficulties, emergent literacy phonemic awareness, word identification skills and spelling, development of reading fluency and academic language, concepts related to reading comprehension, promotion of comprehension and analysis, analysis of various texts, curriculum design, professional roles and responsibilities, and professional development.
