Exam Outline

The ILTS Early Childhood Education exam contains 100 multiple-choice questions, and you will be given a time limit of 3 hours and 15 minutes.

The exam is split into four subareas.

I. Child Development, Learning, and Assessment (25 questions)

The questions in this subarea assess your knowledge and skills pertaining to the following:

  • Early child development from birth to grade 2
  • Factors that affect learning and development
  • Early childhood curriculum
  • Planning instruction that is based on knowledge of children from birth to grade 2
  • Goals, benefits, uses, and types of formal and informal assessments that support children from birth to grade 2 and their families
  • Creating and maintaining a safe and productive learning environment that encourages responsibility, communication, social skills, and self-motivation

II. Language and Literacy Development (31 questions)

The questions in this subarea assess your knowledge and skills pertaining to the following:

  • Young children’s verbal and nonverbal language and communication development
  • Providing learning experiences that enhance and support speaking and listening skills
  • Foundations of literacy developmentUsing evidence-based strategies that are developmentally appropriate for promoting literacy development
  • Word-identification strategies and vocabulary development
  • Using evidence-based strategies that are developmentally appropriate for promoting vocabulary development
  • Reading comprehension
  • Evidence-based writing processes and strategies

III. Learning Across the Curriculum (31 questions)

The questions in this subarea assess your knowledge and skills pertaining to the following:

  • Fundamental mathematical concepts and skills
  • Promoting mathematics learning for young children
  • Fundamental scientific concepts and skills
  • Promoting scientific learning for young children
  • Fundamental social science concepts and skills
  • Promoting social science learning for young children
  • The comprehensive nature of the physical, social, and emotional development and well-being of young children
  • Fundamental fine arts concepts and skills
  • Promoting fine arts learning for young children

IV. Professional Relationships and Responsibilities (13 questions)

The questions in this subarea assess your knowledge and skills pertaining to the following:

  • The importance of building collaborative and positive relationships with children’s families, community agencies, and other professionals to support learning and well-being
  • The roles and responsibilities of early childhood educators

Registration

To register for the exam, you must first create an ILTS/ISBE account. Once your account has been created, log in and select the Early Childhood Education exam. From there, you can register for the exam, pay the $122 testing fee, and schedule your testing appointment.

Test Day

On the day of your exam, you should arrive at the testing center about 30 minutes earlier than your scheduled appointment. After you arrive, you will be asked to sign in and provide two valid forms of government-issued ID.

Before the exam begins, you will be asked to place all personal items (cell phone, wallet, keys, watch, etc.) in a locker outside the testing room, or you may be asked to leave them in your car.

Once the test begins, you will be allowed to take breaks. However, the timer will not be stopped during your break, so use your break time carefully.

How the Exam is Scored

Your ILTS score is determined by taking your raw score (the number of questions you answered correctly) and converting it to a scaled score from 100 to 300. To pass, you will need to get a minimum scaled score of 240.
