Exam Outline
The ILTS Elementary Education (Grades K–6) exam contains 210 multiple-choice questions and has a total time limit of 5 hours and 45 minutes.
The exam is split into six testlets.
Foundations of Literacy (40 questions)
The questions in this testlet assess your knowledge and skills pertaining to the following:
- Foundations of literacy instruction and assessment
- Emergent literacy development
- Decoding and fluency development
- Development in vocabulary, academic language, and comprehension
- Developing comprehension and analysis of literary and informational texts
English Language Arts and Biliteracy Skills (40 questions)
The questions in this testlet assess your knowledge and skills pertaining to the following:
- Writing development and the writing process
- Development of listening and speaking skills
- Factors that affect bilingual students’ language and literacy development and learning
- Planning culturally and linguistically responsive and sustaining instruction
Mathematics (40 questions)
The questions in this testlet assess your knowledge and skills pertaining to the following:
- Strategies for teaching counting and cardinality, operations, and numbers in base ten
- College algebra and statistics
- Properties of numbers and operations involving fractions
- Operations and algebraic thinking
- Measurement and data
- Geometry and statistics
Science (30 questions)
The questions in this testlet assess your knowledge and skills pertaining to the following:
- Interrelationships among science, technology, and society
- Using scientific investigations and inquiry skills
- Fundamental concepts, principles, and interconnections of the life sciences, physical sciences, and Earth and space sciences
Social Studies (30 questions)
The questions in this testlet assess your knowledge and skills pertaining to the following:
- Structures and functions of government
- The rights and responsibilities of citizenship in the US
- Necessary attributes for successful participation in civic life
- Interrelationships of economic and political principles, systems, and concepts and their relationships to developments in the world, the US, and Illinois
- Major concepts, phenomena, and principles of culture, geography, and sociology
- Interrelationships between people and their environment
Arts, Health, and Physical Development (30 questions)
The questions in this testlet assess your knowledge and skills pertaining to the following:
- Historical, societal, and cultural contexts for the arts
- Concepts, materials, and techniques pertaining to the visual arts, drama, dance, and music
- Providing students with learning opportunities that allow them to express themselves via the arts
- Fundamental practices, concepts, and principles pertaining to movement, team-building skills, and sports
- The role of physical activity in promoting the cognitive, personal, and social development of students
- Systems of the human body
- Principles and practices pertaining to family, community, and personal health and safety
- Providing students with skills and knowledge that will aid in their making sound health-related decisions

Registration
To register for the exam, you must first create an ILTS/ISBE account. Once your account has been created, log in and select the Elementary Education Grades K–6 (702) exam. From there, you can register for the exam, pay the $150 testing fee, and schedule your testing appointment.
Test Day
On the day of your exam, you should arrive at the testing center about 30 minutes earlier than your scheduled appointment. After you arrive, you will be asked to sign in and provide two valid forms of government-issued ID.
Before the exam begins, you will be asked to place all personal items (cell phone, wallet, keys, watch, etc.) in a locker outside the testing room, or you may be asked to leave them in your car.
Once the test begins, you will be allowed to take breaks. However, the timer will not be stopped during your break, so use your break time carefully.
How the Exam is Scored
Your ILTS score is determined by taking your raw score (the number of questions you answered correctly) and converting it to a scaled score from 100 to 300. To pass, you will need to get a minimum scaled score of 240.
