Polygons, Similarity, and Congruence

Geometric Symbols: Polygons, Similarity, and Congruence

When you see this, this symbol looks like a triangle. This would be read triangle ABC and that’s the way you can name a triangle without having to write out the word triangle, just makes it a little quicker. This shape looks like a rectangle and so this would be read rectangle ABCD.

It’s just a shortcut for naming a rectangle. You can draw the symbol instead of writing out the word rectangle. This last shape is a parallelogram. This is how you could name a parallelogram without having to write out the word parallelogram. This statement would read Triangle A is similar to Triangle B.

This little squiggly symbol means is similar to. This would be triangle A is similar to Triangle B. See it’s much quicker if you write this than it is to write out the whole thing. It’s just a little shortcut. Then if you saw a picture like what I have down here these marks here, these segments that are marked to the same way.

Segment BA and segment FE since they have the same markings on them. That means that they are congruent to each other, and it’s the same with segment AD and segment EH. You could say segment AB is congruent to segment EF, and segment AD is congruent to segment EH and this symbol just means is concurrent to. When you see things that are marked the same way, it means that they are congruent to each other.
