What is the STAAR Test?
The STAAR is a system of tests Texas public school students are required to take at the end of each school year:
The main purpose of these assessments is to see how well students are grasping the curriculum for their grade level. The results help parents and teachers understand a student’s academic progress, and the performance of schools and districts are also evaluated.
STAAR Scores
For the end-of-course (EOC) exams that high school students take, the scores are reported as a scaled score.
Each question you get right adds one point to the raw score. After you finish, the raw score total is converted to a scaled score. This conversion works a little differently depending on the test, and the minimum score you need in order to pass also varies from one test to another.
Using a scaled scoring system like this helps balance the differences in question difficulty across different versions of the test so the results are comparable and fair for everyone.
Performance Levels
Your final score will be placed into one of four categories:
Masters Grade Level
A score in this performance level indicates that you are expected to succeed in the next grade without much academic intervention (if any). You have demonstrated critical thinking skills and have applied your knowledge and skills in various contexts.
Meets Grade Level
A score in this performance level indicates that you have a high likelihood of succeeding in the next grade. However, you may still need some academic intervention. You have demonstrated critical thinking skills and have applied your knowledge and skills in familiar contexts.
Approaches Grade Level
A score in this performance level indicates that you will likely succeed in the next grade if you have targeted academic intervention. You have successfully applied your knowledge and skills in familiar contexts.
Did Not Meet Grade Level
A score in this performance level indicates that you are not likely to succeed in the next grade without significant and continuous academic intervention. You have not demonstrated a sufficient understanding of the necessary knowledge and skills.
To pass, you must reach at least the “approaches grade level” category.
How to Check for STAAR Scores
To check STAAR sores, you can visit the official Texas Assessment website and log in to the student portal using your child’s unique access code and their date of birth.
If you don’t have the access code, you can use the lookup tool on the website. You’ll need to provide your child’s first name, SSN, and date of birth to retrieve their score(s).
