Exam Outline
The NES Foundations of Classroom Support and Instruction (519) exam contains 80 selected-response questions, and you will be given a time limit of 2 hours.
The exam is split evenly into four content subareas.
I. Literacy (25%)
The questions in this subarea cover the following:
- Using word structure and context clues to comprehend text
- Understanding a text’s main idea and supporting details
- Basic comprehension skills
II. Language Arts (25%)
The questions in this subarea cover the following:
- Standard written English usage
- Grammatical structure in standard written English
- Elements of effective writing
III. Numeracy (25%)
The questions in this subarea cover the following:
- Properties of numbers
- Number operations
- Algebraic principles
- Data analysis
- Measurement principles
- Geometry
IV. Instructional Support (25%)
The questions in this subarea cover the following:
- Supporting literacy and language arts instruction in the classroom
- Supporting mathematics instruction in the classroom
- Understanding the role of a paraprofessional

Registration
To register for the exam, you must first create an online account on the NES website. You may then register for your examination appointment with Pearson VUE.
The testing fee for each subtest is $49.
Test Day
On exam day, you should arrive at the Pearson VUE testing center about 30 minutes before the exam is scheduled to begin. Once you arrive, you must sign in and present your photo ID to the proctor. You will be photographed and asked to sign a roster and other rule forms.
Personal items are not allowed in the testing room and must be stored outside the testing room. This includes electronic devices, bags, keys, wallets, and hats.
Just before the exam starts, you will be given a brief tutorial on the testing system.
How the Exam is Scored
Your NES score is determined using a scaled scoring method. This method takes your raw score, which is the number of questions you answered correctly, and converts it to a numerical score on a scale of 100 to 300. To pass, your final score must be at least 220.
