Exam Outline

The Praxis 8004 exam is split into three categories and contains a total of 77 selected-response questions. The whole exam is timed at 100 minutes, and each category is timed at 30–40 minutes if you take them separately via Praxis Steps.

1. US History, Government, and Citizenship

This category contains 33 selected-response questions, which cover the following nine topics:

  • Cultures and regions of Native American peoples before European contact
  • The founding and development of European colonies in North America
  • Important changes in the US from the 1800s through the early 1900s
  • Important changes and reforms that affected society
  • US entry into WWI and WWII
  • How fundamental US documents reflect the basic ideas of American democracy
  • Types, levels, and purposes of governments
  • The rights of citizens

2. Geography, Anthropology, and Sociology

This category contains 23 selected-response questions, which cover the following ten topics:

  • Different types of maps
  • Short- and long-term effects of human activity on the environment
  • Major facets of culture and how culture contributes to unity
  • The shaping of behaviors, beliefs, values, and traditions via culture
  • Concepts of identity, group membership, inequality, social stratification, and how social institutions influence patterns of interactions

3. World History and Economics

This category contains 21 selected-response questions, which cover the following ten topics:

  • Factors and innovations that facilitated the development of early human civilizations
  • Characteristics of ancient civilizations
  • The effect of trade, exploration, colonization, religion, and scientific movements on global interactions from 1200 to 1750 CE
  • Major developments of the 20th century

Registration

To register for the Praxis Elementary Education Fundamentals 8004 exam, you will need to create an online account with ETS. Through this account, you can register and schedule the exam.

During registration, you will be asked to select the test-taking format (remote or at a testing center), test location (if you are taking the test at a testing center), and test date. You will also need to pay the $79 exam fee.

Test Day

In-person Testing

You should arrive at the testing center 30 minutes before the scheduled testing appointment on test day. For this process, you will be asked to provide a printed copy of your admission ticket and two forms of valid identification.

You will also be asked to store all personal items (such as your cell phone, wallet, keys, and accessories) in a secure locker before entering the testing area.

Once the check-in process is complete and you are fully approved for testing, you will be led to the testing station and given a brief tutorial on the testing system.

Remote Testing

To take the exam remotely, you must use a laptop or desktop computer that has the ETS Secure Test Browser downloaded and installed on it. This is the browser you must use to take the exam. You will also need a functioning webcam, speakers, and a microphone.

When you check in to take the exam, the remote proctor will ask you to show proof of identification and to move your webcam around the room so that your testing area can be observed. Once the proctor has approved your testing area, they will walk you through the testing process and begin your exam.

How the Exam is Scored

Your Praxis Elementary Education Fundamentals exam score is based on the number of questions you answer correctly (your raw score). Your raw score is converted to a scaled score. The scaled score you need to obtain differs slightly depending on which state you take the exam in.

You should receive an official score report about five weeks after testing.
