NES Social Science Exam Outline

The NES Social Science exam contains 100 multiple-choice questions, and you will be given a 2-hour time limit.

The exam is split into five content domains.

I. World History and Historical Thinking and Skills (25%)

The questions in this domain cover the following:

  • Major developments in world history from early civilization to to 1600 CE
  • Major developments in world history from 1600 to the present
  • Historical thinking and skills

II. US History (25%)

The questions in this domain cover the following:

  • Major developments in early US history to 1877
  • Major developments in US history from 1877 to the present

III. American Government (20%)

The questions in this domain cover the following:

  • Civic participation and skills
  • The roles and systems of government
  • The rights and responsibilities of US citizenship
  • Basic principles of the US Constitution
  • The structure and functions of the branches of government in the US

IV. World Geography (15%)

The questions in this domain cover the following:

  • Spatial thinking
  • Geographic tools and skills
  • Physical and heritage-based features of regions and places
  • Human systems

V. Economics and Financial Literacy (15%)

The questions in this domain cover the following:

  • Basic economic concepts
  • Characteristics of different economic systems
  • Economic indicators
  • Absolute advantage and comparative advantage
  • Financial decision-making strategies
  • Paying local, state, and federal taxes
  • Risks that can arise from contractual terms and conditions

Exam Registration

To register for the NES Social Science exam, you must first create an online account on the NES website. You may then register for your examination appointment with Pearson VUE.

The testing fee for this exam is $119.

Test Day

You should arrive at the Pearson VUE testing center 30 minutes before the exam is scheduled to begin. This will give you enough time to complete the check-in process. When you arrive, you must sign in and present your photo ID to the proctor. You will be photographed and asked to sign a roster and other rule forms.

Personal items are not allowed in the testing room, so they should be left at home or in your car.

Just before the exam starts, you will be given a brief tutorial on the testing system. You will also be given everything you need to work out any calculations by hand (no calculator will be provided).

How the Exam is Scored

Your NES Social Science score is determined using a scaled scoring method. This method takes your raw score, which is the number of questions you answered correctly, and converts it to a numerical score on a scale of 100 to 300. To pass, your final score must be at least 220.
