CMRP Exam Outline

The CMRP exam contains 110 multiple-choice questions and has a time limit of 2 hours. Your score is based on 100 of the questions. The remaining 10 questions are unscored pretest questions that are mixed throughout the exam and are not identified.

The questions generally test two cognitive levels:

  • Recall: The ability to recall or recognize specific information
  • Application: The ability to comprehend, relate, or apply knowledge to new or changing situations

The 100 scored questions are divided among five content areas:

  1. Procurement/Product Value Analysis (28 scored questions)
    • Recall: 10
    • Application: 18
  2. Inventory Distribution Management (25 scored questions)
    • Recall: 10
    • Application: 15
  3. Information Systems and Data Management (9 scored questions)
    • Recall: 3
    • Application: 6
  4. Finance (16 scored questions)
    • Recall: 10
    • Application: 6
  5. Strategic Planning, Leadership, and Compliance (22 scored questions)
    • Recall: 10
    • Application: 12

Registration

Eligible candidates apply for and purchase the CMRP exam through the American Hospital Association Certification Center. After your application is approved, you will receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) email with instructions for scheduling your exam with PSI through the AHA Certification Portal.

The CMRP exam can be taken in either of the following ways:

  • At an approved PSI testing center
  • Online through PSI live-remote proctoring

If you choose live-remote proctoring, you must complete PSI's system compatibility check to make sure your computer supports the remote-proctoring software.

Your exam eligibility is valid for 90 days. You must schedule and take the CMRP exam within that 90-day window or you will forfeit your application and examination fee.

Testing-center appointments are generally available Monday through Saturday, except for some holidays. Available appointment times vary by location and are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.

The current CMRP examination fee is $425, with a discount available for AHRMM members. Eligible veterans may be able to receive reimbursement for the examination fee.

If you need to change your appointment, you can reschedule through the AHA Certification Portal at least two business days before your scheduled exam. Your new examination date must still fall within your original 90-day eligibility window. You can also switch between a PSI testing center and live-remote proctoring at least two business days before your scheduled appointment.

Test Day

If you are testing at a PSI testing center, arrive about 30 minutes before your scheduled testing time. Candidates taking the exam through live-remote proctoring should log in no later than their scheduled testing time. Remote check-in generally takes 10–15 minutes and can begin up to 15 minutes before the appointment.

Candidates who arrive more than 15 minutes after their scheduled testing time will not be admitted. If you miss your appointment without rescheduling at least two business days in advance, you will forfeit your examination fee.

You will need two forms of identification to take the exam. Your primary ID must be current and government-issued and must include your name, signature, and photograph. Examples include a driver's license, state identification card, passport, or military identification card. Your secondary ID must include your name and signature. Temporary identification is not accepted.

If the name on your registration differs from the name on your identification, you will need documentation of the name change.

Some CMRP questions require calculations. A silent, nonprogrammable calculator without paper-tape printing capability or an alpha keypad is permitted. Calculators used at a testing center are checked to ensure they meet these requirements.

How the Exam is Scored

Although the CMRP exam contains 110 questions, only 100 questions count toward your score. The other 10 are unscored pretest questions and do not affect whether you pass or fail.

PSI issues score reports on behalf of the AHA-CC. Your score report indicates whether you passed or failed and also provides your raw score in each of the five major content areas. A raw score is simply the number of scored questions you answered correctly.

The passing standard is established using the Angoff method. Subject-matter experts estimate how likely a qualified candidate is to answer each scored question correctly, and those judgments are used to establish the initial minimum passing standard.

Different versions of the CMRP exam may vary slightly in difficulty. AHA-CC uses a statistical process called equating to account for those differences so that candidates taking different exam forms are held to an equivalent standard. This means there is not necessarily one universal number of correct answers that applies to every version of the exam.

Candidates taking a computer-based exam receive their score report on-screen and electronically. Candidates taking a paper-and-pencil special administration generally receive their score report by mail several weeks after the exam.

After you pass the exam, the AHA-CC issues your official CMRP certification materials separately.

Study Tips

Start with a CMRP Practice Test

Before creating your study schedule, take a CMRP practice test to establish a starting point. You don't need to wait until you've reviewed every purchasing strategy, inventory metric, and regulatory requirement. At this stage, the goal is to identify where your preparation time will have the greatest effect.

Review your results by domain:

  • Procurement/Product Value Analysis: Can you evaluate purchasing alternatives, apply GPO agreements, support product standardization, and apply strategic sourcing principles?
  • Inventory Distribution Management: Do you understand PAR levels, receiving, distribution, product recalls, expiration management, inventory accuracy, and inventory performance metrics?
  • Information Systems and Data Management: Do you understand data standards, GLN, GTIN, UDI, gap analysis, item-master integrity, MMIS/ERP systems, and system interfaces?
  • Finance: Can you support budgeting, reconcile invoices, evaluate cost-saving initiatives, analyze utilization, and support asset management?
  • Strategic Planning, Leadership, and Compliance: Do you understand performance improvement, LEAN principles, departmental goals, ethics, safety, regulatory requirements, supplier relationships, and customer satisfaction?

Identifying those specific weaknesses will show you where to devote more attention during your study time.

Review Difficult Questions

After each practice session, review every question you answered incorrectly AND every question you guessed on or answered with low confidence. A correct guess does not demonstrate that you understood the health care supply chain principle or selected the answer for the right reason.

For each difficult question, determine which of the following caused the problem:

  • You didn't know the underlying supply-chain concept.
  • You knew the terminology but couldn't apply it.
  • You focused on purchase price instead of total cost.
  • You ignored patient-care or clinical implications.
  • You overlooked an existing contract.
  • You failed to account for expiration or obsolescence.
  • You calculated a metric correctly but interpreted it incorrectly.
  • You understood the operational issue but not its financial consequence.
  • You answered according to your own organization's workflow instead of the broader principles represented in the CMRP content outline.

Then, outline a specific plan for improvement based on what you discovered. In other words, don't just say, “I need to study inventory.” Note that you need to practice calculating and interpreting inventory turns and identifying the cause of recurring stockouts.

Similarly, replace “study purchasing” with a specific goal, such as practicing how to evaluate supplier performance.

Utilize Answer Explanations

Answer explanations are an underutilized study resource. To take full advantage of them, read the explanation for every question you found difficult, including questions you answered correctly.

For each one, make sure you can confidently explain:

  1. Why the correct answer is correct
  2. Why each incorrect option is less appropriate
  3. Which CMRP domain is being tested
  4. What information in the scenario controls the answer
  5. What effect the decision has on cost, quality, operations, or patient care
  6. How the same principle could appear in another health care supply-chain situation

If the question involves purchasing, reconstruct the decision. Ask yourself what the organization needs, whether there's an existing contract, what the acquisition cost is, what utilization is expected, and what risks are associated with the supplier.

If it involves information systems, determine how the data affects downstream processes. An incorrect unit of measure in the item master can affect purchase orders, receipts, inventory levels, pricing, and financial analysis.

Study Specific Decisions, Not Generic Facts

The CMRP exam isn't simply a procurement or warehouse-management exam with hospital terminology added. A health care supply-chain decision can affect patient safety and outcomes, clinical workflow, revenue, infection prevention, staffing, financial performance, and much more. That means the lowest-cost option is not automatically the best option.

For example, suppose two surgical products are available. Product A costs less per unit. Product B costs more but has less waste, faster setup, greater standardization, fewer substitutions, and a lower training burden. The correct analysis requires looking beyond acquisition price.

Use this framework:

Cost + Quality + Outcomes + Operations + Risk
