Write an essay where you tell us about what drives you in your pursuit of your graduate degree.

Benjamin Franklin once said, " an investment in knowledge always pays the best interest." My name is Riley Garland Hopkins. I am a senior at Keys High School. I feel I deserve this scholarship because I'm a hard worker. I am a good student. I do all of my school work and I attempt to help my school in any way that I can.
In my school we have many different activities and clubs. I am the Senior Class President. I am in FCA/FCS. FCA/FCS is a Christian organization in which students can come together once a week and listen to the Gospel. I am a member of the Keys High School Concert Choir. I have earned numerous awards for vocal solos and ensembles, including State gold medals and being named an All-State Chorus finalist. I was also in the Keys middle school concert choir. I am a current member of National Honors Society and Indian National Honor Society. I am the historian of Mu Alpha Theta. I have been a member of the Keys High School Academic Team all four year of my high school career and have served as team captain. I enjoy the academic team because it challenges me and pushes me to learn in all areas of knowledge. I was also on the academic team in middle school.
While attending Keys High school, I am also a student at the Indian Capital Technology Center as well, where I am currently enrolled in my second year of Informational Technology. I currently serve as the student president of the IT am session of the SkillsUSA chapter. I have been a member of SkillsUSA and competed in quiz bowl two years in a row. This competition is very similar to an academic team competition. As of the time I am writing this I have gone to State with my team one time and we are currently working on going to State again this year.
In the home I was raised in, money did not come easy. We never really did without, but we never really had the money to do a lot. Neither one of my parents went to college. My mother graduated high school and started to work. She started a family with my father instead of going through college. My father didn't graduate high school. He dropped out and began working in ninth grade. This meant that I will be the first person in my family to go to college.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education." Education is very important to me. It is almost impossible to get a job without a high school diploma and the kind of job fields that interest me requires me to attend college and get at least my bachelors degree. When I graduate high school I plan to attend Northeastern State University. I plan to possibly double major. I want to major in computer science and technology and my second major would possibly be in vocal music education.
After I graduate college I plan to get a job in the IT department of the Quiktrip corporate headquarters in Tulsa, Oklahoma. If I am unable to pursue this dream I will either become an IT person at a local school and teach choir, or possibly begin my own technology repair and troubleshooting business. Also after college, I plan to get married and begin a family of my own. I have high hopes and dreams of becoming a productive citizen and with a strong background of college career classes, I feel I can achieve my goals and pass down the knowledge of the importance a college education can make to my children.
