For the past 5 years, I worked to promote programs that served Miami’s lower-income communities, but I grew frustrated. It seemed as though, no matter what services we provided or how hard they tried, some people struggled each and every day to just to make ends meet. How can this problem exist in the world’s most powerful country? I didn’t want to just treat a symptom of this problem. I wanted to learn how to fix the problem altogether, which is why I ultimately decided to go back to school to pursue a Master of Public Administration degree.

Studying Policy Analysis at NYU also provided the perfect opportunity to cultivate a passion of mine, economics. By taking more of these courses, I have come to realize that many of the issues I observed in Miami are caused by failures in our country’s economic policy. My time at NYU has helped me realize what I want to do, more than anything, is create policy that promotes economic opportunity and social mobility.

Upon graduation, I plan to secure a position as a Policy Analyst at an organization dedicated to promoting this same mission. In such a role, I will be able to continue conducting research on issues like poverty and economic opportunity to help the organization advocate for change on the state or federal level. Ultimately, I hope to work for an elected official to directly influence legislative policy efforts on the federal level. It is in such a position that I believe I will be able to accomplish my goal of creating policy that promotes economic opportunity within our country.

In today’s political environment, we have been conditioned to put our needs before the needs of others – but I don’t agree. We need more people to receive advanced skills to conduct meaningful research and help make substantial innovations in the public sector. I believe I have the passion, determination, and creativity to make meaningful contributions to this field, which is what drove me to pursue my graduate degree.
