Write an essay where you tell us about what drives you in your pursuit of your graduate degree.

I am a proud mother of five children and love to stay active with them. But after the birth of my fifth child something changed. I became withdrawn, overcome by simple tasks, exhausted and scared. After speaking with my OBGYN she diagnosed me with severe depression and referred me to a therapist. But because there is such a shortage of therapists and psychiatrists in my area, I was put on a waiting list. During this time my depression became even more overwhelming. I eventually tried to commit suicide and was hospitalized for seven days. When I got back home my treatment plan involved seeing a therapist every week, a psychiatrist every two weeks, participating in group therapy, reading self-help books and attempting to stay active with my kids. Slowly I began to feel better and as I did I realized that my suicide attempt could have been prevented if only there were more therapists available in my area. That is when I knew that I wanted to pursue my graduate degree in Art Therapy. I never want anyone else to go thru what I went thru. So I guess you could say that going thru hell and back because of depression inspired me to pursue a graduate degree in Art Therapy.
