I am pursuing a Master of Studies in Law in Organizational Ethics and Compliance at the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis, MN. I discovered that I have a passion, a knack, and a strong interest in law through my recent experience as a whistleblower and a survivor of employment discrimination and unlawful termination. I worked in an R&D microbiology lab and blew the whistle on serious health and safety concerns, was fired last August 2018, which sparked an OSHA discrimination investigation that is still in progress. In my quest to find a private employment law attorney, I began to learn the ins and outs of employment law and how to think like a lawyer. I have invested enormous amounts of time and energy into self-educating myself on relevant case law, civil procedure, and industry best practices, and the most credible and meaningful encouragement toward pursuing a career in the legal field has come from employment law attorneys, state and federal compliance employees, job coaches, and mental health professionals. A career transition from science to law makes perfect sense for me right now, and it is the natural next step for me. I am driven by my own set of personal values of fairness and justice, as well as a deep compassion for my former coworkers who are still stuck in a toxic, difficult situation, and for my coworkers who were also personally harmed by workplace retaliation after raising the same health, safety, and quality concerns. I did the right thing, and I paid dearly for it. I lost my livelihood, my identity, my dignity and self-worth, but I also gained immense strength and resilience throughout my whistleblowing experience. I gained clarity on the type of career where I would excel in: law and ethics. This graduate MSL in Organizational Ethics and Compliance program at the University of St. Thomas will help me achieve that.
