Write an essay where you tell us about what drives you in your pursuit of your graduate degree.

My unique path to graduate school started back in 1995 when I graduated high school. I was six months pregnant with twins. I had no job; I lived in the back bedroom of my mother’s three bedroom row home. I had no idea how I was going to raise these children; however, I was determined to give them a life better than I had as a child. I vowed that I would graduate from college and I would not become another statistic.

I kept my promise to myself to complete college. I had graduated Cum laude from Walden University with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Public Administration in 2013.

In 2016, my life changed dramatically, I finally found the strength to leave an abusive relationship. It had gotten so bad that it was a point that I could’ve lost my life. My sister also suffered a traumatic brain injury, leaving her in a vegetative state. My sister has her bachelor’s degree in Human Resources. We had planned to pursue our Masters in Human Resources together. Our dream of going to school together was no longer a possibility as she can’t walk, communicate, or interact with the outside world.

I am currently in graduate school at Wilmington University, I have a 3.92 GPA. I am majoring in Human Resources. This degree is not only for me; but to honor my sister. Honoring her spirit is what keeps me motivated. Her dream may have been derailed by circumstances that were out of her control; however, I am continuing on this journey for the both of us.
