Write an essay where you tell us about what drives you in your pursuit of your graduate degree.
My plan was to do what I had done every morning: make breakfast and send a child off to school with a lesson to ponder. This particular Monday morning was different. It started off with the dreaded subject: “Master’s Degree.” The child frowned at me when I explained that the life you describe requires a higher education. The child who had been taught to speak freely, but respectfully chimed in to say “…it sounds like somebody’s trying to keep me in school forever.” Never in a million years did I think I’d hear these words, so I chalked it up to “a rough night for the kid.” The following morning, we entered the same conversation again only this time with a side of pancakes, eggs, and bacon. These breakfast mornings lasted one year and seemed to have no end until I mumbled, “…I can show you how to do it.” Well, that night was a rough night for me because the thought ran through my head, “Why would that come out of my mouth knowing that I have breakfast with a child who loves to challenge?” Anyway, I went to bed thinking that this kid won’t think twice about our conversation and we will revisit the subject again tomorrow with refreshed minds. The next morning as we entertained our favorite topic, the child says, “Old people can’t go back to school!” Well there was my inspiration! My next action was signing up for the GMAT exam! After twenty four years of being out of school, I spent the next two years staying up all night studying for exams and completing most group projects by myself, just to teach a twelve year old that “if I can do this, so can you” and of course, that “old people can go back to school”. To say the least, this kid educated me. I ended up working two jobs while still making those “educational breakfasts” every morning. Who was this kid? My son. He is now 16 years old. After giving him my graduate degree with a 4.0 GPA, he is now planning to get his own master’s degree. There is my new inspiration. My son’s master’s degree!
