Write an essay where you tell us about what drives you in your pursuit of your graduate degree.

I have always had big goals and aspirations since I was a child thanks to my parents. I was always told that I can be anything that I wanted to be and that they would support me. Although I am a first generation college graduate my parents have always made it known that education comes first and it is important to not settle for anything ordinary. I attended the University of Texas at Arlington and received my BBA in Finance. College became extremely hard to me academically but with faith and perseverance I was able to graduate.

Upon graduation I was excited and figured that since I had a degree that I would end up in my dream career and make a lot of money. I was also hesitant on going to grad school because I did not want to take out more loans and I also felt as if my GPA was too low. Unfortunately, I was out of a job for 5 months and did a little temporary work here and there. During this time, I admit that I felt defeated and as if my degree was a waste, but it actually motivated me to make sure that I continue to beat the odds.

I am passionate about business and finance and knew that I eventually wanted to get a C-Suite position. I kept getting a feeling that I should just put my fear aside and start applying to grad schools. I am now a MBA candidate at the University of Houston- Downtown and I am very proud. I work full time and I am also maintaining a 4.0 GPA! I am driven to complete this degree because I want to fulfill my goals of being in the corporate world but I also want to be an entrepreneur. I want to use the skills that I have gained from grad school to help me be a serial entrepreneur within Houston and give back to my community. My parents and grandparents also still work. I want to be able to put them in a position to where they do not have to work and worry about bills. I am thankful for my family’s continuous support and sacrifice throughout my career. Everything that I do is for them and this is why I will make sure I complete this degree.
