Write an essay where you tell us about what drives you in your pursuit of your graduate degree.

The humbling experience of self-funding my education all my life taught me about the importance of always keeping faith, studying smart, and staying positive. I am the first person in my immediate family to hold a bachelor’s degree let alone a Masters. For me, obtaining a graduate degree is a testament to my academic journey and my family’s sacrifices to get me here. I understand the privilege I have by just being able to attend school, so I capitalize on every education opportunity I have.

I realized it was time for me to go back to school when I was granted the opportunity to participate in a fellowship. I participated in an Evidence Based Practice Nursing Fellowship last year which allowed me to work with a Director of Nursing Research on a project of my choice. I was able to meet and work with a number of nurses that were on an administrative level. Whether it be an educator, manager, specialist or director, one common denominator was that they all held a master’s and/or doctorate degree. I looked at them and was amazed at how many of them started as bedside nurses like myself and transformed into nurse leaders and knew that was the direction I wanted to head.

When I finish graduate school, I would love to work as a nurse program coordinator. I enjoy bringing projects to life and with my nursing background, my projects can be focused on nursing wellness and/or optimal patient care. I will also take so much pride in knowing I would be a graduate prepared registered nurse. Someone once told me that education is something that no one can take away from and I whole-heartedly believe that. I want to be part of the next generation of nurses who show the world that we are evolving and succeeding in other roles beyond bedside care and higher education is a one way ticket to that goal.
