Write an essay where you tell us about what drives you in your pursuit of your graduate degree.

Preparing to enter graduate school to become an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) requires self-motivation, discipline and hard work. Multiple factors contribute to my desire to earn a graduate degree. I am greatly inspired by other nurses and the nursing profession itself. I was first inspired to become a Registered Nurse in high school. Unfortunately, I became very ill during my junior year. Watching the nurses and doctors do their work really sparked my interest in becoming a nurse. Once I returned to classes, I attended a job fair where an ACNP spoke about her career and what it involves. Her passion for her career and helping her patients every day inspired me to research the career myself to find out it was something I thought I would love as a career path.
Once I graduated from college and began my own journey of being a successful Registered Nurse, I had the opportunity to work with many excellent ACNPs. They have passion for what they do, including how they care for patients, how they continue to learn and perfect their skills, how they communicate with patients and physicians to ensure continuity of care, and how they maintain professionalism throughout even the most difficult situations.
Working with ACNPs has shown me every aspect of the career, including the amount of compassion for what they do and why they are doing it. I care about my career because my motivation is to try to save lives as well as improve the quality of the patients’ lives. In critical care, there are a lot of ethical situations and moral encounters when caring for people with multiple advanced diagnoses. This aspect, now, motivates me the most. As a Registered Nurse, I am able to care for these patients, but I want to be able to care for them at a higher level. I want to have the ability to have the tough conversations and educate the patients and their families enough so that they can make the best decisions possible.
