My long-range goal as a social worker is to work intensely in the provision of mental health services. Issues with mental health are often at the root of how many people deal with their environment. I am profoundly interested in young people and how they cope in their environment; my short term career goal is to work with children and adolescents in settings that are natural for them such as school and community centers. The field of practice that I plan to get involved in is the mental health field. Over the last ten years, the mental health field has undergone many changes some for the better and some are not. I hope to help those who need it most in the area. I also plan to work in the direct practice method. I enjoy working closely with patients so that we can both work toward a solution for them. In assessing my own strengths and weaknesses I recognize that I am a very reserved person. This can usually be noticed when I am acquainted with new people. Recognizing this, I am currently engaged in developing a more outgoing approach when interacting with others. Another life lesson that I am working on is the fact that people work at their own pace. I am aware that my vision of a better outcome for someone must be determined in that person’s timeline. One of my biggest strengths is that I am a dedicated person. When it comes to other’s I don't stop until they are taken care of. Social work deals with the lives of others. As a social worker, I would be responsible for helping someone with the details of their life. Another one of my strengths is Trustworthiness. Throughout my life, I have always been known as a trustworthy person. I have learned that trust is a bond that people in a social and professional circle place a high value on. That is one of the reasons I have always made sure that other personal information and thoughts are held close to me. I consider empathy, social perceptiveness and self-awareness to be essential to the social work profession. Empathy allows a social worker to be able to relate to everyone they are surrounded with regardless of the social worker’s personal background. This is important because social workers are called to accommodate all that are in need. Self-awareness is important because we all have to be able to take constructive criticism. It is important that social workers don’t allow pride to get the way of their profession. Although the social worker is the professional in the client, social worker relationship, it is important that social workers take note of their client’s feelings toward them. Lastly and in my opinion the important quality that all social workers must have an amount of is patience. Having patience is a quality that all professionals should have but this quality is especially important for social workers. No matter how hard a social worker works to implement plans for their the client always has free will to do what they choose to. In times like these social workers need to be patient with there clients. Not doing so can result in the client becoming weary of their social worker.
