Write an essay where you tell us about what drives you in your pursuit of your graduate degree.

As an older non-traditional student, I have decided it is time to give back. I have been working in industry for 25 years and the military for fifteen years, spanning 40 years in technology. I have always had a strong desire to teach others, having taught in the US Air Force for ten years. I am pursuing a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Engineering with a goal of teaching at the university level. Teaching for me is like breathing. I just love seeing the light bulb turn on in a person when they grasp a difficult subject or figure out a challenging problem. My course of study is in the Internet of Things and Blockchain which I hope to draw together into an automatic and reliable method of cataloging transactions from semi trailers.

I also see a disturbing trend for young engineers where they are technically sound, but lack skills in leadership and emotional intelligence. Most young engineers are introverts and happy to sit alone designing. This limits their ability to advance and grow within their career. My goal will be to help these young people understand leadership and how emotions play into their leadership style.

All in all, I want to spend the remainder of my working life teaching and enabling students to succeed in life.
