Write an essay where you tell us about what drives you in your pursuit of your graduate degree.

To succeed in a graduate program, one must be determined and hard-working, however, in times like these we also need something else, motivation. My motivation comes from my mother because without her I would not be where I am today. As I was growing up my mother raised my sister and me by herself, especially once her mother died. The more I grow the more I learned everything that she has sacrificed so that I can be in the position that I am in today. My mother worked long hours at a bank office and even longer hours teaching night school. She did this without ever complaining a single day in her life and whenever things become even tougher, she prayed even harder. She has kept my sister and me first no matter what. Growing up, she made sure that I was involved with sports, my community, and my church as often as I could to not only keep my on the right path but to teach me that no matter what problems I am going through, someone else is going through worse. No matter how many times I want to give up or quit, I can always reflect on the life that she provided my sister and I and the lessons that I have learned through her teachings. I am motivated by her because she does not complain she just does, and what she cannot do she tries. There is never an option to not put forth my best effort especially when I can, there are no excuses. I am so motivated and impressed by my mother because she never boasts about her successes or grumbles in failures, but she takes each for what they are, moves on, and continues to work hard. As I have started to grow into a man I have learned that it is not about what we say or do in the public eye, but rather what our actions are behind closed doors that make us who we are.
