Write an essay where you tell us about what drives you in your pursuit of your graduate degree.

One word would describe my intent for pursuing my masters degree, and that word would be passion. Learning about what truly makes me happy, I’ve come to understand that assisting others is essential in my own formula to a happy life. Obtaining my masters in social work allows me the ability to contribute back to the community, while continuing to achieve my definition of success. This master’s program will equip me with the knowledge and understanding to fully grasp the complexity of real-life adversities. I know the consequences and I can relate to the children and teens who are trying to fill voids they are missing at home. These empty voids end up being filled with bad choices, and as they become adults those choices become habits. Becoming a social worker is a significant step towards advancing my career, but I don’t want to stop there. When I learned of the social work program at Azusa Pacific University, I was intrigued by the macro option that would provide me the expertise to improve the community with programs that can help at a larger scale. My goal is to implement the importance of mental health in elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools. Positive thoughts lead to positive actions and decisions, which in turn would lead to less children turning to drugs, alcohol, or other outlets. My goal is to research and learn the most that I can, so I know how to provide the programs, classes, and assistance that is needed. Informing how significant mental health is to communities where it’s never talked about will make improvements to problems that have been carried on from generation to generation. Advocating for the placement of therapists in schools and opening community centers for the youth and entire neighborhoods to benefit from are both concrete solutions to combat the mental health crisis. The best way to help others is by giving them the ability to help themselves. My passion is the fuel needed to help, and others deserve to live their passions
